Title: Ridgewood upgrade
Post by: automan77 on November 02, 2014, 04:20:06 PM
Put on my aquastat cover and the flanges on my stack and vent pipe today and it looks nice.  Dressed it up  Craig mailed them to me Friday.

Saw that those were available on Facebook. How do you like it?

The roof flanges are nice.  Small bead of chaulk  your good to go. The aquastat cover gives it a nice look.  The roof flanges in would really recommend.

OH OK, now I understand! They look good! Suggestion, get the uninsulated pipe out of your stack and replace it with an adapter and insulated stack pipe, water can and will travel down the outside of your pipe and go directly inside your boiler, I know because I have had to re weld 2 boilers this summer because of that very thing!

Could I put some high temp caulk around it
Title: Re: Ridgewood upgrade
Post by: slimjim on November 04, 2014, 06:31:46 AM
It would have to be VERY high temp, your stack temp more than likely is over 1000 degrees when running hard, best bet is insulated chimney as it is wider than your stock chimney and any rainwater simply falls off the drip edge and onto the roof, besides, its a good looking boiler, don't you want the stack to look nice as well?

Hey Slimjim Thanks for the suggestion  I'm gonna go with a insulated stainless stack. Should have it done in a couple days.

I added a "hood" around the base of my chimney this year. I built it out of 20" aluminum flashing. Fashioned it into a cone shape and cut it so it fit the roof. Then I got a 8" band clamp from Menards to clamp the top.

Has there been trouble with water getting under the skin??

Chicken Farmer.........if the caulk is compromised, water could get in there. As long as you maintain it, there is no problems.

I bought a stainless insulated pipe and adaptor yesterday at menards. Put that on and I won't have to worry about it.

I went to Menards and got a 36" stainless stack and cap and put it on my 7500 tuesday night. Looks nice.

I've seen a lot of stacks with and without caps.   What does P&M recommend ?   Cap or not.   My thought would be to install a stainless cap on my 2840....

Not sure what their recommendation would be. My chimney comes straight out of the top so my thought was it will keep rain and snow out while the stove is idle.

I don't recommend them but if you want to, it does nothing to the warranty, the best one I have seen was the cone shaped one that Wood Doctor used to use on their units, it kept the rain out without impeding the draft

I think I'm gonna run without a rain cap..   Ran without last year  with no problems..

Looks good Scott.

I might have to make another trip to see him. I do like the idea of making a cone to go around the bottom to deflect wAter . Menards here I come

Jamesbodeis,
I couldn't find the insulated stove pipe at our Menard's, was it in the heating section?  Did it fit OVER the pipe coming out of the stove on your 7500?

Slim,

Our stove is under a lean to and is approx. 2' from the metal roof, how high once I get through the metal would you recommend I extend the pipe?

Thanks as always,,,,,,,,,,,vpm

I thank you very much for your suggestion.  Still very wet here in southern Indiana.  We are way behind in getting beans and corn out of the fields.  Started to feed hay yesterday and the feed lot looks like February.  Finished the plumbing on the stove yesterday and am waiting for the core driller to go through basement wall ( Monday or Tuesday ).  I should have more questions when that part of the install takes place, meanwhile, still packing firewood for the 2 fireplaces!!!  Life is good............vpm

I had a hard time finding it there myself. It was near all the ductwork but a couple aisles over and all by itself. Yes it does fit over the pipe on the stove.

Are you guys just shooting a couple self tapping screws through the adapter into the chimney pipe?

Post by: jamesbodeis on November 08, 2014, 11:21:11 AM
I actually just sat mine on the chimney not realizing there was an adapter. Seems plenty sturdy so far, but havent had a real stiff wind yet either.

Chicken farmer, by "chimney pipe", i'm not sure if you're talking about the Ridgewood chimney or the insulated chimney. I used the locking ring Menards sells to attach the adaptor to the insulated pipe, but I just inserted the adaptor into the Ridgewood chimney. My chimney goes through the roof of a carport so it gets support from that too. My chimney is 7' tall.

I installed my insulated pipe this morning but it's not a real tight fit so a need to secure it better. It's a little loose but it won't come off.  Any suggestions?   I tryed to upload a pic but it said the uploader file was full

I tryed to upload a pic but it said the uploader file was full

Is that exactly what it said? "Uploader file is full"?

I did a search, the only thing I could find under that is about 6 years old in the help section of Simple Machine. The whole forum needs updated but not sure lowly moderators have the access to upgrade.

I've been thru a lot of the behind the scenes stuff looking for a cache that needs to be either dumped or made larger, no luck yet.

Installed the two stacks yesterday, perfect fit over the pipe from Ridgewood.  The hole in the roof was a great fit as well and it is incredibly sturdy.  Caulking with high temp caulk today and waiting for the core driller to punch through basement wall, hopefully tomorrow.  Again, thanks to james, slim and automan...................

Nice lead on a free photo hosting site, I never got past the Twenty Female Celebrities with the Hottest Beach Bodies link though.

Automan - looking at the picture of your new stack, it appears that the chimney adapter slips inside the Ridgewood chimney pipe. Is that right? How did you secure the adapter to the Ridgewood pipe? I will be doing this same type of thing on my 2000, but I might add a storm collar around the base of the stainless pipe just to divert water farther away from the base of the pipe. Looks awesome!!!

The adaptor fits pretty snug but I still shot 3 self tapping  screws thru the stack into the adaptor. It's nice and sturdy.

Glad I saw this Scott, I will have to put in a call to Craig. I'm thinking the aquastat cover is due to failures in cold weather last winter.

Just put the stack on my 7500 and started it up on Saturday. The pipe at Menards seems to be the least expensive of any of the other options I found, plus it was in stock! I really appreciate the link and pictures, this was the last piece of the puzzle for me. Now to finish up my wood shed. I think I'll end up supporting the stack to my shed somehow. I saw a bracket when I was at Menards, might give that a try.
