General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re- Insulating my OWB
« on: July 20, 2018, 09:37:43 AM »
I have been painting my Shaver OWB with "Rust Seal" and then plan to put new insulation on to replace the old stuff.  I am wondering if there is an insulating board I could use on the top, that would be better than the Batt Insulation?

Perhaps an insulating board and then Fiberglass  insulation to lay on top of it.  Does anyone have any ideas?

I used some of that foil wrap [for radiant heat] on the one side last year to cover up the rolled fiberglass insulation.

Thanks in advance for your help, I appreciate it

Well,  In speaking with the Alt Heating Supply People, he advises me against using a stainless Steel Plate Exchanger for heating the pool because it is Brazed with copper.  He said Plate Exchangers are not intended for Pools.  He advises a Tube N Shell Heat Exchanger.  They are actually made for Swimming Pools.

So another lesson learned.  I did get 10 years of  service out of the plate exchanger, and it worked adequately.  And it is about $300 cheaper.

Thanks for your help

Thanks guys,

I am planning on draining the OWB today and refilling it.  I have enough of the 101G2 here at the house to do the job.

Pools & Hot Tubs / Plate Exchangers for Swimming Pool / OWB
« on: July 03, 2018, 04:46:26 PM »
I have been heating my pool with my OWB for a number of years now.    Lately I have noticed my OWB is over flowing, I believe my Plate Exchanger has rusted through and now my pool water is ending up at the OWB.  So I will be buying a New Plate Exchanger.

My question is: do I need to purchase a special type of Plate Exchanger?  I believe I saw somewhere where when used with Chlorine Swimming Pool I should use only a specific type of plate exchanger.

Maybe someone has run into this and can advise.

Thanks

Shaver Furnace / A Lesson Learned
« on: October 25, 2017, 07:17:56 PM »
Shaver, I wish I knew then what I know now.  I think we all would have chosen another brand.

I've had some issues and now am left with this forum and George to help out.  I'm in the process of tearing down one side at a time,  I paint what I can with a product called Rust Seal.  It works well.  I then re insulate and I have replaced the tin siding on one side.  Now I hope I can get another year out of it.

Cutting wood is hard enough and now to try to upkeep on a rusting stove, that was never even painted........At least it has a 20 year warranty right?   LOL

If anyone knows of the latest insulation to use, I would appreciate some info.

And if anyone could recommend a good company to replace this stove with....I think Portage and Maine might be my choice for my next one.  Let me know what you think.

Thanks

Plumbing / Plate Exchanger for Hot Water
« on: November 11, 2015, 07:01:50 PM »
I have a plate exchanger for my domestic hot water.  I've had it in place for about 7 years.  Do you think I should take it out and have it cleaned?  I think I heard about a chemical that can be used to clean it........It seems like it may be restricting water flow.  Thanks in advance for your help.

Shaver Furnace / Re: How'd your Shaver do this past winter??
« on: June 19, 2015, 08:00:01 PM »
We made it thru the winter with our shaver 290.......burned a lot of wood....heated 2 houses though.  I have a 24 x 24 wood shed 6 foot high on the wood and we burned almost all of it.  this furnace likes the wood for sure.

I had a pump go bad on me a year ago.   It started making a whining noise.....just got louder and so I figured I had better replace it.  Does anyone know if these pumps could be rebuilt?  is it worth it?

I add water constantly with my shaver........You have to.........and to think with some stoves you only add a gallon or two a year......I add a gallon or two a day atleast!

Shaver Furnace / Re: Rusted Lid
« on: March 04, 2015, 06:44:18 PM »
Well the lid finally came.............From December to March........what a company!  I think I will do the repairs on it this weekend.  thanks for all the info, that will help.  It's a shame but yes, I am much better off asking you guys that have been doing this a while rather than dealing with the dealer.  And my dealer doesn't want anything to do with Shaver anymore.  He says it's because of the regulations in PA.  I know there is more to it than that.

Thanks Again

Portage & Main / Re: Second guessing myself after the install
« on: February 21, 2015, 04:32:21 PM »
I think it is more important to know the water volume around your fire box - Btu's and all that other junk matters very little.  You have to have the volume of water to keep your heat in the cycle up to your desired level.  Compare water volume before you buy......
