RidgeWood Stoves, defunct, support only / Ridgewood going out of business
« on: February 04, 2016, 09:25:06 AM »
Just took a look at the Ridgewood Stove web site, Big bold letters.... "Going out of business liquidation sale" I guess after Craig left,
things didn't work out so well for Tim on his own. Looks like some pretty low prices on their remaining stoves. I wish I had a spare $3500
laying around, I'd buy a spare.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / High temperature alarm
« on: January 26, 2015, 12:01:07 PM »
Due to a recent stuck open draft door and having a small boil over, I decided to set up a high temperature alarm. This is what I came up with.http://www.ebay.com/itm/Thermometer-for-Stove-Pipe-Chimney-with-Remote-Alarm-/200900534134#ht_1740wt_1153 I thought about using a barbecue thermometer like many others are using but this one has features I liked better. No batteries, and you can add a remote alarm. It is advertised as a chimney thermometer and alarm but it has a wide enough range to work on an OWB water line. They also make a wireless version with two readouts.http://www.ebay.com/itm/Wireless-Thermometer-for-Stove-Pipe-Chimney-/111469890043?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item19f41f89fb#ht_1720wt_1105 Right now I have the probe attached to the copper water line before the sidearm HX. I set the high temp alarm at 195. It also has a low temp alarm if your fire gets to low.

I just read that Michigan's Governor Snyder signed Senate Bill 910, now Public Act 417 of 2014. It prohibits the Michigan DEQ from enforcing any new EPA rule restrictions on wood stoves and wood burning appliances. The article states that the owners of Hawken Energy, Z Supply, and Ridgewood Stoves all testified at a hearing on the legislation how the EPA rules would harm their businesses and other small businesses. The article is on  http://www.nfib.com/article/?cmsid=65836

Plumbing / Circulator for sidearm
« on: December 24, 2014, 11:20:01 AM »
Can anyone recommend a good circulator for a sidearm?  I'm thinking the smaller the better...... wouldn't need much flow. I'm just looking for a little faster recovery time.

Hey Slimjim, in the past week or so you have commented to a few people about the need for a barometric damper if they have too much draft. Are there any set guidlines on chimney height or other scenarios that would show the need for one? I have a 7 ft. chimney on my Ridgewood  (to clear the carport roof), and quite often have flames coming out the top of it when the stoves draft damper is open. Could the flames indicate to much draft, thus pulling to much heat out of the chimney, or is this just a sign of a good hot fire?

I could tell by the dual tire tracks in the driveway that the propane truck had backed in on Friday. Funny thing is for the 1st time ever there was no bill hanging on the door ????  Could it be because the tank was still at 85%, right where it's been since they topped it off 2 months ago?  The next thing they'll want is a lease payment for the tank for not using enough...... oh well, I still win!

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Return water temp.
« on: October 05, 2013, 04:49:51 PM »
Of everything I've learned on this site, it seems the most important is return water temps. So I have an idea, I'm going to install an adjustable snap disc tempurature switch on the return line after my water to air HX with my thermostat wire hooked to it. I'll set it for 140º, and if the water temp drops below that my furnace blower will shut off. If we are away for a weekend and the boiler temp drops, this will help preserve the temp we have by not allowing the blower to cool the water off even further. If the house starts to cool off, my other thermostat will fire the furnace up and I'll burn a little propane. Will this work? I'm sure I'm not the first one to try this.
