General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: How often do you clean your OWB?
« on: November 28, 2011, 05:13:15 PM »
It's not a gasifier, but rather a home built OWB.  I pull ashes and punch (jargon for brush) tubes every week.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Does your furnace overshoot temp?
« on: November 28, 2011, 03:28:09 AM »
As to why your temp spikes up; as Willie G noted residual air is still supporting combustion and the residual heat mass is not being forced up the stack when the blower stops.
As far as efficiency; Thin walled fireboxes give better heat transfer which should make them more effIcient.
Thick walled Fireboxes have more thermal mass allowing the water to stay hot longer and promoting longer burn times which should also in theory promote efficiency.  The overall winner -(?)

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Firewood length
« on: November 27, 2011, 07:09:09 AM »
Cut my wood 22" last year and elected to cut it slightly shorter this year-about 20  to 22".

This according to Webster's Dictionary

Face Cord
"A unit of wood cut for fuel equal to a stack 4 X 8 feet with lengths of pieces from about 12 to 16 inches."

First known use of Face Cord
circa 1926

The plot thickens!

Good point - Regardless, the control device(s) should be double checked.  Something is not quite right.

336
I don't think it should be running st such a high pressure.  The designers must have intended it to run below 10 psi.  Is there a control device which has failed?  Not trying to be alarmist but low water and over pressure is potentially an explosive combination.  If it were me i would allow it to cool to the point where the pressure is 0, make sure the water level is at normal, and than try to figure out why it is over firing.  Is there an aqastat that is supposed to turn on and off a combustion blower fan?

I have always understod a face cord to be one third of a full cord - i burnt nine full cords of wood last year or as some may say- 27 face cords.

Shaver Furnace / Re: Ash not what your furnace can do for you......
« on: November 24, 2011, 07:01:26 PM »
I remove ashes every week -  put them in a 15 gallon metal pail.  When the pail is full it gets dumped onto a pile.  In the spring the ash pile is mixed with the chain saw chips that I get from blocking up 9 cords of logs and this concoction is used around the yard to fill in any low spots.

And soon the smell of turkey will be wafting from our OWB's.

Which model aquastat do you have.  Here is a link for the installation manual for a common honeywell aquastat.

On what grounds are they ruling that the unit is not allowed in that location - too close to a building? , too close to a property line?  Or is it just that it was never initially inspected?  If it is the later than perhaps it is a matter of some official showing up and signing off on the install.

Thanks for the link lugnut.  It's just like being in a candy store.

I also doubled my insulation in the "off season".  I am not sure, so far, what difference it has made.  I should have a better idea in a couple of months or so.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Solar Panel for Hot Water
« on: November 18, 2011, 02:00:46 PM »
I would probably consider a solar panel(s) as a standalone for domestic hot water only.  It should be great spring, summer and fall and would likely be helpful in the winter months.  I believe the evacuated tube style is considered the better technology but I am not up on the latest trends.
