Plumbing / Re: Keep your baseboard plumbing a closed system!
« on: January 06, 2009, 05:28:15 PM »
Thats the way I have mine.. going on my 6th winter. atmospheric (open) loop outside with the wood furnace and 12 psi closed loop inside. When I installed my system, i tied it into the existing oil fired boiler as another circuit. I don't run antifreeze, and I have not had any corrosion issues with my regular steel unit using just water.

« on: December 27, 2008, 07:49:42 AM »
I average 10 cords here in Upstate NY. I have been burning pallets mostly for the last 2 seasons as the wood is free and I do not have my own wood lot. 6 seasons now with my OWB. I only use it from appr. mid October to early April. need a break in the warm months to enjoy the swimming pool i put in with the money i saved from not buying oil.

Johnson / Re: any johnson owners
« on: December 27, 2008, 07:42:14 AM »
New member here. Just wanted to add that i have been a very satisfied Johnson owner for 6 winters. Little John heating a 3,800 sqft older home with a hydronic system. I hooked up the heat exchanger as a zone to the existing oil boiler in the basement. Took a season to get used to the differnt way the house heats up, but compared to paying for on average 1800 gallons of oil a year.... I put in a swimming pool with the savings.
I don't own a wood lot, but have been very succesful scrounging for wood during the year. Mostly I burn pallets that i get from a couple of sources. they are always well seasoned and mostly oak. Burning pallets rarely smoke. If I could do it all over again, I would buy a Johnson again! easy to clean out the ashes, easy to stoke,
