I learned today that he tried to get his wodd burning by adding acetone.  Had severe burns and succumbed at the hospital.

Similar to events when meth labs blow.  Pretty good vapor trails can come from that.

Some sad news in a nearby county.  A 47 year old veterinarian died from injuries in an outdoor furnace explosion on his property.  He seemed to be very involved in his community.

No details were given on what the explosion was about.  I may make a call to get more info.  Are any types of furnaces capable of that?

Fire Wood / Re: Scored bunch of wood from tree service

He called me again yesterday to get more. I asked what he would charge to deliver, since it had to be loaded and hauled off site.  For a hundred bucks they are running out a massive truck with a dump bed full of the remaining logs and rounds.

I am good for the season and well into next year.  One of the gals in the office who lives nearby, said she enjoys splitting wood.  Time for a bonfire and neighborhood gathering!

I made my first attempt at a Holz Hausen, this weekend.   Forgot a couple of pointers from Youtube (why is it one person can explain everything in 2 minutes and another has a 20 minute video on the same topic?)

Seems like I have a lot more wood in small footprint of four pallets. Make the circle and fill the center as you go, then cover the top. Let it stew.

Added pic I took. Still need to finish filling the middle before shingling it with bark pieces.

Fire Wood / Scored bunch of wood from tree service

Guy I know has a tree cutting service. Had a job on the Indiana University campus, and offered free wood.

I got two car trailer loads of logs, and his crew loaded my pickup bed with rounds each time.  Mix of cherry, ash (of course) and maple.  Cut the logs down to length and rolled them off the trailer.

Plenty more i could have gotten, but I was  tuckered out.

Got my big Husqv to going and spent the day cutting up tornado downed tree tops on the farm.  Lots of splitting in my future.   Wiil be my first attempt at a Holsen Haus.  The things that amuse some people!

Have a nice fire going and sipping on 12 year old VanWinkle- well deserved...

Equipment / Re: Chainsaw oils both bar and 2cycle

I was running Poulon Pro, after buying it from a coworker who operates a family small engine operation on the side.  Ran out and while wife was at the Stihl dealer getting me a replacement fuel cap (Spent more time looking for that dang cap in the leaves that the chore i did)  she got an orange bottle of bar oil.

I saw a drastic difference in the heat on my bar with the Stihl. Going back to the Poulon and will keep the orange as a back up.

Equipment / Re: Work Gloves

The fingertips go in mine first.   I find a poorly made loose fitting glove can make work more tiring.

Those knit rubber coated gloves might do well.  Last couple of years, i get some pain in my fingertips being out in harsh cold.

Yeah, just heard on the radio, the lawsuit was permitted to proceed. Good luck with that one.   Just a few jurors with a lick of sense will keep a award from being paid.

I added a shed to the back and an outbuilding near the boiler.  I still have a wood yard that it the first stop for the split wood. Let it season there, on pallets and covering.   every now and then refill the shed.

Cold front coming in, so we loaded the shed to the gills yesterday. Going to take some time off for more cutting now that gun season is done.

Getting them too, and this is the only related site I visit relative to boiler.

General Discussion / Tornado touch down near the farm
« on: November 06, 2017, 05:20:52 PM »
Yesterday afternoon the worse storm yet to hit the farm happened, according to my 87 year old neighbor.

Pretty sure it was a tornado- photo was taken of a funnel cloud just before super high winds, rain and hail hit.

Very little damage in my County, but a couple mikes away, across the line, several homes damage or destroyed. Big trees knocked down at the root ball.

No injuries reported, thank goodness.

Only issue at my place was the cover to my wood stack was blown off and the next-in-line wood to burn is soaked. Power was off until this morning. The linemen came in force before nightfall and got to work as good men will.

I called the shop that installed my boiler. They said they likely installed a connector for such things.  Since I also have a damper issue, and new equipment was tied in, I asked them to do a service call. -   I enjoy solving problems, but the dang thing saves me so much money, I want it fully operational asap.

I have been running it for my downstairs unit, and manually propping the damper and closing it as boiler temp changes. Keeping small amount of wood in the box. Seems to work well- just have to feed it more than the 12 hour feeds I am used to.

Little education on wood economy is good. getting a better feel for how much to put in on temperate days, and to have faith when it looks like the fire and coals are dead, a little oxygen is all it needs.

Thank you guys.  Actually I dont think there is a tie-in from the water supply. What are your thoughts if I tie in on the line running up the garage wall, to the upstairs furnace, and run water up to push the air out, or tie in above the heater on that same line?

I had an garage heater intalled last week and got my boiler going.

Downstairs heat is fine, and the garage heater is hot on entry and exit pipe.  Directly inline with upstairs, but it isnt getting the water up to it.   I know some water drained out when the lines were cut for the hook up, but since the heater seems to be ciculatiing? Am at a loss.

There are definatly lifesavers on the board.  I am in my fourth year, and had a couple boil over surprises.

Had quick replies, and got solutions to the cause.  There are good people here.

Kindred spirits when we are all feeling smug in our warm homes on a sub zero night.
