how long will yours idle without dying
« on: October 03, 2010, 03:57:31 PM »

hi
i built my homemade boiler and this will be my first year.
i fired it up yesterday it ran nice all night too but the next day last time it ran the blower was about 10 am
and by 2pm the fire died.
its about 57 degrees now and the house still on 75 degrees, the house blower hasnt ran since 10 am and i dont heat my domestic water so there was no call for heat and the boiler temp was at 177 and now about 165.
how long will yours stay live without the boiler blower or damper open?
maybe its just not cold enough but at night its in mid 30.
thank.
i burn pine that is cut in spring.

I don't have my furnace finnished yet.But from the research I have done and my experiance with other fires.I would say you need some sort of hard wood in there to keep some sort of coal bed.So when your boiler kicks on there is some coals to relight the fire

What Ive found is pine does not keep the hot coals like hardwood does in warmer weather..What I do is mix it with hardwood..Put the hardwood on the bottom and the pine on top..In the winter, You wont have a problem burning straight pine since youll be calling heat way more..Hope this helps!
