Post by: Bluegrass Wood Burner on October 23, 2018, 04:05:49 PM
I seemed to have lost myosin structures on how to use the drop kits. Can you guys bring me up to date on the way to check for nitrates?

If your kit has the two bottles, check the exp date. If it is past that then it will not give you an accurate result.
If you do have the two bottle type (and it isn't expired yet) , fill the test tube up to the center of the line and put in 6 drops of the small bottle and then shake. After that add drops and shake. Each drop is 50ppm. It will turn color when you get to the correct number of drops.

If you have the newer kit with the powder packs, fill the test tube to the center of the line and pour in the contents of one pack. Shake really well and then start adding the drops as with the other kit. This one is not as precise and requires a lot more shaking and the color has to stay changed for at least 40 seconds.

Thier website doesn't help. Maybe I missed something. My kit is only a year old. I have added a little water since that time. Changed pumps and accidentally lost some water so I feel I need to add treatment. RSI I will follow your instructions, thanks.

Kit expired March of 2017. I went ahead and tried it and the water never changed from the pink color up to 40 drops. I assume it's a spoiled kit. The little bottle had pink big bottle had a yellow color. Is that right?

That is pretty normal for an expired kit. It would eventually turn color but the older the kit gets the more drops it takes. There is no way to know how far off it is. 40 drops could be equivalent to 20 or less on a good kit.

I would just get a new one. The good thing about the new powder is that the shelf life of the kit is about twice as long.

I believe I will take your advice and trash it. Any suggestions on a simple inexpensive kit that is accurate.

Those kits are fine as long as they are not expired.

How about this kit? Anyone use it.
I'm a little disappointed in the other kit and that it would expire that quick.
I know it's a small amount to pay to insure our boiler water is corrosion free. Seems they need to put some preservative in thier preservative test kits. LOL
