General Discussion / AH FOR THE WOOD SHED
« on: February 02, 2011, 07:15:28 AM »
Freezing rain and over 1/2" of ice on everything! But not on the wood pile, thanks to the wood shed.We have over 50,000 people without electric at 9AM today and with temps to drop to 11° tonight could be cold in a lot of homes. The wind here in Stark Co. at 25 to 35 mph. does not help either. We were lucky at our place, lost power at 1AM and it was back on before 5:30. I didn't even get to hook up the generator.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Ohio OWB owners
« on: January 27, 2010, 08:37:59 AM »
This is from the Ohio EPA.    January 21 2010

Dear Mr. Williams,

I am sorry that there was no reply to your e-mail to the director. Unfortunately, the draft

rule for OWB is still under Agency review. Right now we do not have an estimate of when a second draft of the rule might be available for public comment.

I know that this is not very informative, and we know that many people are waiting for the next draft of this rule.
The director is also aware of the interest surrounding the rule. I wish I could give you a more concrete time table,
but this is the only information I have at this time.

I thank Erica for getting back to me on this matter. And I thought some of you Ohio  OWB users might want to share with the Ohio EPA your feelings about the new rulings.

PS Let friends or neighbors that have OWB's, know that they also could share there feelings.

Electronics / Current sensing relays
« on: January 23, 2010, 10:36:19 AM »
Does anyone use a current sensing relay to power a lite to show that a pump or a blower fan motor is running, without going out to your outdoor stove? If you do,what brand do you use and what was the cost?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / It could be this weekend
« on: December 03, 2009, 04:44:31 PM »
We have not had to put wood in the stove more than one time a day since it was started September 29th.But looking at the weather forecast for the next few days it's going to be the coldest of the season so far.
May need more than one fill per day soon.

It's June 5th. and I let the fire in the OWB go out. When things cool down I will clean it out,cap the chimney and test the water. Then wait for fall to start all over again.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / It's going to be cold tonight.
« on: May 17, 2009, 06:36:24 PM »
It may get to the low 30's here tonight. I'm glad there is still wood in the OWB. Might be a little cold in the house in the morning without heat. May 17th.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / OWB to heat a greenhouse
« on: March 28, 2009, 04:46:11 PM »
Any one on this site heated a greenhouse with an OWB? If so is it best to use hot water under the tables or will it work ok to use a fancoil unit for hot air?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / OWB water temps.
« on: March 16, 2009, 08:23:41 AM »
I am using four(4)K type thermocouple thermistors to check on the water temps.of our system.

(1) at the outlet of the pump that is at the OWB.

(2) where the water line enters the basement.

(3) after the water leaves the side arm for DHW.

(4) after the water passes through the HX of the forced air furnace.

This way I can tell what loss that I have from the OWB to the house, across the side arm and the HX for the furnace. This also lets me know if I need to add wood because of low water temp. I use my dig. multimeter to read the information that the thermistors are sending. Posting some photos. Click on the photos to see a larger picture.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / OWB Loading door bolt replacement
« on: March 14, 2009, 01:58:44 PM »
Because the hinge bolts had egg shaped the holes in the loading door,I drilled out both sides of both hinges and pressed in bronze bushings.I then used shoulder bolts and nylok nuts. Now if the bushings wear all that needs to be done is to push out the worn bushings and press in new ones.
