Title: Wood processor - Who's got one?
Post by: Crow on March 09, 2017, 11:13:57 AM
So I'm considering purchasing a wood processor.

I am currently looking at a Wallenstien WP835 which for those unfamiliar with it, uses a winch to pull the logs to it and up a ramp where you use your own saw ( attached to a holding and pivoting bracket), not a hydraulic driven saw. I know that the potential to pick up mud on the wood is there by winching, but as a lot of the trees I am working with are skidded out on the snow already, so still clean, but are full length.

The other units I look at mainly are built for 8 -10 foot logs with a log lifting device, but do have a saw built into the design.

Not really looking to spend a fortune on one or looking to make it a unit for hire, just have enough demand here between myself and aging family members I think it would be worth it.

I am curious who here has one and would they recommend their model to a friend, or what pros and cons theirs has?

Mine aint’ made no more but it sounds about what you’re looking for, I’ve thought about seeing if any patents are still in effect (I highly doubt it) and manufacturing a few, then I think of all the ways idjits could get hurt running it and resulting lawsuits and thats the end of that brain fart.

You’d be surprised but I’m running a .404 63 gauge semi chisel chain on mine and it stays sharp a long time even dragging them thru the dirt or mud.

Yes Marty, very similar to yours except the winch cable pulls the log all the time. The one I am looking at is a trailer type that I could pull with the 4 wheeler if necessary, but they do make a 3 point hitch version as well.

Marty,  I'll take one :) I'll even sign a waver saying any idiotic moves resulting in but
Not limited to loosing one or more limbs/fingers/toes or chin hairs I'll take full responsibility! ^-^

A buddy bought one of the Wallenstein units a few years ago, sounds like the 835.. He brought it over to try one day along with two helpers to pile, a buddy to spell him off on the chainsaw and myself to fetch the logs and put them on the base of the ramp with the tractor.
In two hours we had 3 bush cords split and piled in the shed, then the sky opened up.
The biggest problem was the fact that the split wood sat in the shed (open sides) and went moldy before it dried. (it was still not dry the following spring).
He learned to forget about stacking it and just run the pieces up a haybail elevator and drop them in a heap, then stack them indoors after they dry for a month or so.
The next year he let me use it by myself and I found that two of us could split at a civilized speed, even with a 026 Stihl, then push the splits out of the way for the kids to pile in the shed later.

Since then he has sold his processor and OWB in favour of a Central Boiler pellet burner. 3 bags /day

Well, off the top of my head, looking at roughly $2000 just for the PTO pump, valve stack, and hydraulic motor for the saw…..

Can’t imagine the price of a healthy hydraulic powered winch…..

Ouch, add $1500 for a good USA made Ramsey hydraulic winch.

Might cost even more than I thought, can’t find a suitable valve stack from any of the surplus centers, looking at around $1500 for a three stack open center spring return from WW Grainger.

I have never seen anything at Grainger that wasn't way over priced.

Do they have anything that would work at Baileys?

I’ve found some valve stacks that would work, as long as you don’t mind em being made in Bulgaria. I’d rather stick to Prince or something else made in North America if possible so it doesn’t take weeks or months to get replacement parts.

So far no, the modular stack valves are extremely salty their as well. Need a three stack open center 12 volt coil. On the present machine top valve selects either the chain saw or which, middle stack is the splitter/table advance cylinder and the bottom is for the jaw.

I can understand.  The price of a new decent sized processor that is self powered (especially with diesel) is unbearable.  The pto which I would want is still very high priced.

Now I understand why a lot of em use hand operated valves, those are plentiful and cheap.

Keep an eye on Craigslist, I’ve found two exactly like I have for sale in the past. One was like 3 or 4K and the other was $7000, it looked like new though, said was recently painted.

To search a large area use Searchtempest, will search all of craigslist instead of one city at a time.

Yes but with the WoodEze you don't have to cut your logs to fit on a deck...
