heat exchanger hook up
« on: December 23, 2008, 03:32:24 PM »

Has any one here hooked up their heat exchanger in their furnace themselves?  It seems pretty simple... cut a hole, make a ledge for it to sit on, cover the hole, then plumb it.

Am I missing anything?

Know where to get a good price on a heat exchanger?

yes scratch i did my own...the trick is to fill your plenum full of rad...that means leave no space for air to go around your exchanger..the air your blower supplies will take the easiest route available...if it  can go around your rad it will...also you should have valves and unions (or some type of disconnect) so you can take your rad out  of your plrnum in the future for cleaning if needed

when i did mine i couldn't get one rad the same size as my plenum so i staggered two and let them overlap in the middle...it has worked fine this way for me

hope that helps

Thanks guys, I was talking to a heating guy tonight and he also suggested putting in valves like you said Willie.  He said to drain it in the summer if the AC coil is before it.  I guess he's seen them freeze and crack from the AC...  He also said leave 5" of space between the two.
