Title: chains
Post by: Bull on October 14, 2011, 05:22:16 AM
Someone on here made a comment about buying chains for 12 bucks in a post. I was wondering if anyone had a good outlet to buy chains? I just picked one up from my local dealer and it cost $32 for a 20 inch chain so I am looking for a better price.

I'm a STIHL dealer and the we just got the fall price files :o :o.  Stuff has went crazy. I about fell over. The thing is its not up to me to set the price on the stuff I sell. They sent me price files and thats what Ive got to follow, very close anyway :bash: But I do know oragon chains was pretty cheap. Never used one so I dont know if they are any good. But I have alot of saws come in my shop with oragon chains on them so they must not be to bad or to high?

I use oregon. After the new stihl chains are too far gone, I switch to oregon, reasonable price and seem to hold up fine.

This is what I have been buying. http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300353048329&vti=LINKS%0968&ssPageName=ADME:L:COSI:US:1123 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300353048329&vti=LINKS%0968&ssPageName=ADME:L:COSI:US:1123)
They are made by Carlton. I used to buy Woodland pro chains from Bailey's but these are the same thing but cheaper.

Thanks all and BIGDIESEL20S, i figured that Stihl set the prices on their stuff because when I bought my ms290 they were about the same price at the different dealers that I checked.
I will check out the links that were provided and again Thanks all.

Hey Big,

Does price matter on which style you buy?  My step dad has a six stamped on his and mine are three. Same saw.  I think my sprocket has been changed, but last time I bought a chain at a Stihl dealer it was only about $9 this spring.  Would a $10 dollar sprocket change save some cake in the long run with less expensive chains?

Look up Baileys on the net.  There is a spot to receive a free catalog.  They have alot of wood cutting supplies.  They even have big bore kits for your saw.

Fireboss, That was a real good deal. List price on that MS200T is 649.99 with a 12in bar. Add 10.00 for a 14, and 10.00 more for a 16in. Congrats on your steal!

Oldchenowth,     The style and size of the chain changes the price of the chain. They have so many differant chain styles, cuts, and even carbide chains. But I run the cheapest base line chain they have and most of the time its always a green lable chain (the safe chains). Because I never know how is gonna use my saw. But I have no complaints about them. I have used all the other kinds and I cant see paying more for somthing that does the same thing with less safety. But I have people say they have to have that speceal chain. Each to there own I guess!

I bought chains at my local Stihl dealer last fall.  Buy two chains and get the third free.  I bought three and it worked out to 20 dollars per chain.

Fireboss,   Sorry that price I put on my last post was for the ms200 not the ms200t. So it was a good deal. The MS200 with 14in bar list price $659.99.

One Stihl dealer around me always has buy one get one.  It works out to be about 40% off regular price.  Example 2 24" chains are $30 and one at a JD / Stihl dealer are $24.  And according to a logger guy I know they GOT THE STUFF in stock.  From a nut to total rebuild kit.  He swears by them.

I just got some more of these and they are junk. DON'T buy them. Apparently they switched to something different than they had before.

Oregon -  The best made -  Buy three at the time from Ebay - cheaper if you buy three, but they are so good, one will last a long time!!
