Title: Baseboard noise
Post by: Roger2561 on November 13, 2011, 12:07:02 PM
Hi all, You have been so helpful with helping me troubleshoot the problem of keeping fire in my OWB, I figured that now the fire problem is solved, I'd hit you up for some help with the baseboard noise in one of the zones in my house.

I have 3 zones, each operated by their own zone valves connected to seperate thermostats.  The zone in my bedroom is making a weird kind of sound.  When it calls for heat I hear what I call the usual ticking sound but that is short lived.  The other sound I hear from the baseboard, sounds like someone is constantly crinkling paper.  It is loud enough that it interrupts my sleep.  As soon as the heat is satisfied and the zone valve shuts down, the noise stops.  any ideas?

Thanks, Roger

take the front cover off the baseboard and see if thear is room for expancion or is it tite wall to wall ,you  might allso look behind the fin tube see if the paint has been rubed off like sand paper if the first no room end to end you just take a little out the second with the paint missing is from the fintube expanding and contraction rubbing the back or front of sheet metal they sell aplactic bushing that go on the fintube hangers that keeps the fintube centerd

Are you sure there is no air trapped in it?

No.  I am not sure that no air is trapped in it.  When I get a few minutes, I'll purge it in hopes of removing any air trapped air.

Thanks,

Roger

i dont think it would be air or it would sound like a wave or surge  did you take the front cover off to see if the paint is rubbed off behind the fine tube

beeman;  Not yet.  I haven't had time to get back to it but as soon as time gets manageable again, I plan to purge that zone and see what happens.  I'll post back with the results.  Thanks for asking.  Roger

If it is normal expansion then you'd also expect to hear it during the contraction cycle.  But maybe not since the contraction is slower.  All those new baseboards with a copper pipe surrounded by aluminum fins depend on something to support the fins.  Usually between the fins and the support is a plastic absorber.

Otherwise, it doesn't hurt to check for air.  If that doesn't work I'd buy some foam, roll it tight and stick it ...... in your ears. >:D

rhugg;  I hear the expansion when the thermostat calls for heat and the water is flowing.  I hear the contraction when it no longer needs the water flow.  But, what I hear is a constant noise the entire time it is heating that zone, not just a short burst of noise.

beeman;  Looked over the baseboard units last evening and nothing appears to be rubbing anywhere.  So, I may have time this weekend to purge the system.  Hopefully that will rectify the problem.  I'll report back when and if I have time this weekend.

Thanks for your help.

water hammer?

WillieG.  It's not a hammering noise, it sounds more like someone is taking paper and keeps krinkling the entire time it is in a heat cycle.  I haven't had any time to address the problem yet.  Our company will be shutdown for about a week and a half beginning at noon tomorrow so I plan on using that time to try to purge the zone hoping that's all it'll take.  If not, I'll keep trying until I find the problem.

Thanks for the ideas everyone.  I should have this problem solved soon I hope.

Roger

Hi all - Well, I think I have solved the problem I've been having in the noisey baseboard.  The zone that fed my bedroom has those "Sharkbite" connections in them.  I did that a few years ago when I had to service the zone and I had completely forgotten about them.  Due to construction, I had to extend the zone in my bedroom into another room where heat did not exist and that's when I found the Sharkbite connectors.  I took them out and sweated in everything I needed to extend the zone.  After purging the zone of air, I let the OWB do it's thing and at the moment all is quiet when the room asks for heat.  I'm hopeful I have stumbled upon the problem.  I'll keep you posted if the problem shows up again.  Roger
