To answer my own post. No caulking needed. The 1inch fiberglass rope (gasket material) will conform to the channel in the door after door is closed . The heat will form it to the door channel, as the channel in the door is deep enough to act as a mould. Maybe this info will be of help to someone else. Be shire to clean out all of the old gasket material and wire brush the channel before installing the new gasket. :)

Cool. I'm just getting ready to change mine. Thanks.

I do not see your original post so I do not know exactly what you originally discussed. I believe there is a cement product specifically for setting the door rope. Some channels may not be tight enough to hold that rope reliably. I would not want to risk the rope slipping out unnoticed some night and causing the furnace to over heat. Any store that sells wood stoves and the gasket should also sell the cement.

:bash: I'll ask my local dealer when I pick up the seal.

Use 100% silicone. Apply completely around door and place rope into groove. Try not to stretch rope. Good luck.

The silicone I have is only good up to 400 degrees. You would need hi temp silicone at least. I found the bottle of gasket cement and it is good up to 2000 degrees. I purchased it at Menards along side the gaskets. I suspect and TSC and Rural King would also have it.

Just changed mine and that is what I was told to do by my local dealer. Used the whole tube and pressed the rope in. Do not stretch it. Close the door tight for a couple of hours and you should be good to go.
