Title: How corrosive are ashes really?

How corrosive are ashes to my firebox? How much of a concern is this? I know they sell Ashtrol and on another post i read its pretty much like lime? I have a few bags of lime laying around can i use it in place of ashtrol?

I think ash is pretty corrosive when it's damp.  It is probably least harmful during the heating season and very harmful during the off season.  Like lime, ash tends to raise the pH of it's surondings, so I don't see lime as being much of a neutralizer.  After the heating season many people remove and brush all traces of ash from the firebox and then coat the firebox with oil.
