I was going to jump into the gasser-non gasser thread with this question but decided to start a new thread. In that thread cleaning the boiler is mentioned a few times.
I'd like to hear what you are doing and the proper methods for cleaning. My Crown Royal recommends regular cleaning but doesn't get into how should be done. Do you let the boiler go cold and get in there with a wire brush? Or can a hot burn clean things out? Or, as I've been doing, getting in there with a rake and loosening ash buildup around the edges and scraping creosote off while it's burning.
As a matter of fact, my manual says shut down and close damper and all that when filling, but after being skittish for a week I started opening the door during the burn cycle and found I have a much better understanding of what is gong on in there and it's a lot less smokier filling it.
