Title: OWB Loading Gear
Post by: PhinPhan on January 30, 2009, 02:02:39 PM
Reading the Safety Gear thread got me thinking about something else.  What do you guys wear when adding wood to your OWB to keep from smelling like smoke?  Or do you just not care.  I know my wife hates it when I come in from messing with the OWB and smell like smoke.

We both kind of like the smell, reminds us of camping :)  I bought 500 lbs of coal to try, thats a different story, very stinky smoke

I have a certain pair of very stained jeans that I put on, and a certain hat gloves and jacket that I only wear when filling it.  My wife hates the smoke smell on me, and I don't particularly like it either... on me.  I like the smell outside.

I have an old carrhart that I put on, it absorbs most of the smell.  I have also learned the "throw" technique so I stay low and away from it.  Sometimes I wear some decent clothes and have been pretty good at not getting dirty.  The only time I really have a smoke smell on me is when the wind is blowing.  I hate that.

I think it comes with the terriotory, your going to smell like it. I dont smoke ciggarettes, and the odor on those who do is way worse than wood burning smell.I can minimize the exposure by opening the door fully and getting back for about 30 seconds until the air lights the fire, and it clears up. I also have my unit raised up on blocks,so i can easily stay below the smoke, and throw logs in.All my coats, hats and gloves smell like smoke,I am getting used to it,or numb to it now.

Something that has helped me is having one of the hats with a headlamp attached (or clip on light).  It keeps your hands free for loading wood in the dark.

I put a cheap 250 watt halogen light on top of my homemade wood shed right next to the OWB.I got a an extension cord with a lighted plug,I tied the cord, and lights plug in a loops so they are together, and hung them under the sheds roof, when i got out i plug in the light,(i put a 120V  GFCI outlet on the back of my Shaver),I just plug it in,it lights my wood pile, and right at the door.I also bring my paper, and cardboard, throw them in first, they light up the while firebox long enough to see were i can add wood.

Firebug, I do the same thing.  I have a headlight from Gander Mtn that has both LED and incandesent bulbs.  Uses 4 AA batteries. It was like $15 on sale before Christmas.

Jack???? is that like a brand of oil that you toss on the wood to get the fire started or what? Never heard of that.... And jon, you use it too huh...

This must be some tip I've never heard of for starting the fire right?

Jack helps me out sometimes, too.  And every once in a while my buddy Jim will stop by with his cousin Johnnie and their old granddad.

You guys all have a friend named Jack that helps you load your stove?  What do you all live next to each other or what?
I'm gonna have to find some friends to help me load mine.  Some of those logs are heavy!
