Title: Advice on fixing fire rope
Post by: AirForcePOL on January 31, 2012, 08:43:19 AM
Hi all,
I have had my Hardy H2 up and running for a little over a week now and everything is going good.  There is only one thing that I need to fix.  The last couple of times I have loaded my stove the fire rope has came loose when I open the door.  It is caused my creosote building up around the rope and makes it stick when I open the door causing the rope to stay stuck to the opening and it comes out of the channel when I open the door.  The rope was brand new when I first lit up the stove so I would really hate to replace the whole thing.  Is there any way to fix this? Can I just pull the rope out and put some more silicone in there and close it back up? I try to clean the creosote off of the rope and door opening as best as I can but the rope just isnt sticking in the channel like it should.  Thanks!

Get some high temp automobile caulking and put behind it.  Mine did the same thing.  It came lose in a couple of places and I just put the caulking behind it and shut the door and fixed it!

ok thanks! I still have some of the adhesive that I installed it with.  Maybe I'll just try to add some of that behind it.  I'm guessing that I just didn't put enough on it when I put the rope in.  I just didn't know if I could put that on and then close the door right away.  I guess that's my only option unless I want to let the fire go out which I don't want to do.

Congrats on your new boiler!..I don't know if I would be putting auto calking behind the door rope..That would be a bitch to change if you ever had to..Id say from experience with the door gasket sticking is that your burning wet/green wood and the boiler its not running enough..Been there done that.

Thanks Matty! I'm pretty sure the wood I am burning is dry enough.  I did just bring home a truck load of hickory that I split this weekend and it is burning better than what I was using before and it just smells soooo good! I put more of the silicone behind the rope and it holds it in there but it is still sticking.  I'm going to take a wire brush to everything tonight and get it cleaned up really good.

Airforce, I see you live in Athens.  I am right across Gudgel Bridge on Boy Scout Trail.  Small world eh?

It is a small world! I live up by the Middletown/Elkhart area right off of Logan County line rd.  I Grew up in Sherman but have lived out here for a little over three years now.  I'm sure we know a lot of the same people!
