Title: rain cap

think stack is starting to plug up.had no problem with it last year. over summer added rain cap and ranco.now have a mess on the roof and plugging up. should i get rid of rain cap any ideals

If it has a spark arrestor in it you might need to remove it.

no spark arrester think im going to toss the cap.think the rain or snow will hurt any thing while burning .i put a bucket on it in the off season

you'll not get enough rain or snow in there while it's hot to matter at all. in the off season i put a can over it .

I used to have the cap/arrestor.  My stack was doing the same as yours...filling up with creosote as was the expanded steel on the arrestor.  I removed the arrestor, took it and had it sand blasted, brought it back to the shop and cut away 3/4 of the expanded steel and put it back on the chimney.  My only reason for doing this was the hinder the sparks shooting out of the stack since the OWF is about 50' from the woods surrounding my house.

Presently I have the arrestor off the stack because the down draft also gets cut down having the arrestor on top of the stack.  I too put a bucket over the stack in the off season to prevent the rain from getting in the unit.

ya wont have a cap again. just got done cleaning it and it was pretty stoped up.wood is one year dry and split.it made a black mess of my roof.what is a good cleaner for that.

My natures comfort used to do that, it was an easy fix though, jaws using a spark arrestor too.  I turned the fan on and threw in a couple weeks worth of card board trash, it would burn it out every time as clean as a pin

I have a spark arrest or , when I clean my unit I do the cardboard burn or leave the door open until the cap gets cherry red seems to keep it clean for now
