Title: E-Classic 2400 - Cracks in firebox
Post by: Ken01 on May 09, 2012, 10:01:27 AM
Shut down for the season last week after burning a new E-Classic 2400 since Oct 1, 2011.   Cleaned out all areas and found two cracks in the firebox air  flow chambers.  One on the left and one on the right in exactly the same place.  CB Dealer is telling me CB says they have seen this before and not to worry, the cracks will not open up anymore when it is restarted next fall.   I am skeptical these cracks won't keep climbing when it reheats and hit the water jacket seam?    Anyone have a thought?   See attached photos.

Ken, I found a crack similiar to yours out of a lower slotted hole on just 1 side in my left air channel after my first year of use. After my second year use and clean up, it did not seem to extend or open any wider. My dealer told me since it is a dry air channel the metal expands a lot and can cause these cracks. He also told me CB now places expansion cuts up from some of those lower slotted holes in the air channels, much like contrators do in concrete sidewalks, to allow for movement.

OK, good information.   I will keep an eye on them when I fire it up next fall.

I know one thing any crack can't be good I dont see how they can tell you not to worry about it           I would be welding it if it was me

If they say it is ok, I would just leave it alone. If you weld it, I would get them to send you something in writing allowing welding it or it will probably void your warranty.

Welding wouldn't solve the problem it would only fix the current crack. If it expanding that much it will crack again. Something has to give.

I agree with Yotehunter. The expansion of the channels would just re-crack the weld repair. I'm trusting CB, if it starts leaking then it should be covered under warranty at that time.

Im sure you guys are right about the warranty  I take back what I said                 Hopefully it doesnt get any worse I guess you'll have to keep a close eye on it       Jack
