Title: While cleaning
Post by: Roger2561 on May 10, 2012, 03:29:07 AM
While cleaning my OWB for the summertime shutdown, I noticed a crack had developed on the refractory on the floor of the firebox.  When I removed them, those weren't cracks, they were fractures.  Both segments of the refractory came out in pieces.  I know I'll have to replace them.  This OWB is a Central boiler e-classic 1400, new and put online in Oct. 2011.  I have a couple of questions;  1)  What would have caused this?  2)  Can I expect to have to replace them every year?  3)  Any idea how much the replacement cost is for them?

Thanks,

Roger

Check out this thread. I am not following it closely but it appear to be a similar issue. http://outdoorwoodfurnaceinfo.com/forum/index.php?topic=2030.0;topicseen (http://outdoorwoodfurnaceinfo.com/forum/index.php?topic=2030.0;topicseen)

This was my first year with a 1400 too , and I have 1 large crack in he same place it goes all the way through to the ash chamber, I am hoping it is not hard to replace it looks like I can just remove it and drop a new one in.

If there is only one or two cracks and the brick slots still hold the grate rods, I would keep using unless it crumbled and can't hold rods. I wouldn't buy a replacement until then. I believe the owners manual mentions this.

After I completed the thorough cleaning I put back the pieces of refractory that were broke and they mated together nicely.  I think I'll leave them alone unit they become an issue.  Does anyone know if there is a compound available to "glue" the piece together that will hold up to the heat?  If not, I'll try it without it and see what happens.  Thanks for you help.  Roger

RSI - Thanks for the link.  The next time I'm at Home Depot I'll have a look around.
