I have never owned an OWB but grew up on a wood stove in our home. I am about to purchase a CB 5036 this week and my neighbor just installed a Shaver 165. He ordered in Feb. this year and just got it this week. My concern is that the Cb 5036 has no ash box....he keeps telling me not to get it, that the 5036 will be alot of trouble cleaning out the ashes. I like the 5036 because it is well made people here mainly have Hardys but just wanted the CB owners input.
How much trouble is it to clean the ashes out of the 5036 and should I be concerned that it does not have an ash box?

My last wood stove was an indoor unit capable of burning wood or coal so it had shaker grates and an ash pan. I thought I might regret purchasing a 5036 due to the ash issue but I have no regrets after 1 1/2 seasons burning. I am heating a well insulated 1600 square feet with no DHW as of yet. I burned less than three cords last season as our sole heat source. I only removed ash from the furnace three times all year and I never really needed to. I only cleaned it out of concern for corrosion. Each time I could have fit all the ash in a wheelbarrow so it was never a difficult project. The bottom of the box is flat so simply move some coals to one side and scoop out some ash.
You say your neighbor ordered 3 months ago and just now received the unit? Shaver web site "All furnaces can be built, starting the next day. This means that it would normally be finished in approx. 8 days, in your choice of 20 colors. It would then be put on the next truck going your way!" I guess they don't have many trucks.

We don't have a dealer in this area.....I heard they were pretty good. Just Hardy, Shavers and Central Boiler dealers.

I have the 6048. The ash is an odd thing. It seems to pile up fast to the bottom of the door. Then it just seems to stay there... forever. I have burned about 10 cords this last winter. I cleaned it out 3 times so I could put the ashes on my garden.

I hope that is a huge garden. You can mess up your soil ph real easy with that much ash.

I personally don't care for Central Boiler furnaces but if I had to choose between the three brands you listed that is what I would pick.

I was worried about the same thing but have burned mine since early spring with 1 clean out. The ash builds up quickly but if you stir it regularly it turns to fine powder. My dealer told me that and it turns out to be true. Resist the urge to clean out and keep stirring. Grates allow big chunks of your charcoal to fall and not get burned.

I started burning a Central Boiler Classic in 2002 and ash removal was never an issue. Easily shoveled it right out the door just two or 3 times a winter. Upgraded to their E-Classic 2400 now for the wood savings the past 2 winters. Both units have treated me great and I'm a major CB fan. Great features that many other models don't offer. I think you are making a good choice. Burned wood indoors for 10 years prior, don't miss hauling that ash out :).......best decision I ever made!

Shoveling a few 5 gallon buckets of ash per season should be the least of your concerns I feed 2 6048's all winter long and and ash doesn't even register on the work involved meter.

My dealer delivered my CB 5036 Monday morning. Got my thermoplex installed and she is just ready for hook up. Will do the hook up this weekend. Thanks for everyone's input.
