Title: Hooking up thermostat to a unit heater
Post by: AirForcePOL on September 17, 2012, 12:33:14 PM
I have two unit heaters that I will be installing in my garage here shortly.  There isn't a place to hook up 24v thermosat wires on them anywhere.

I'm guessing that the only way to hook them up is to hook up some sort of relay from the thermostat wires to a switch that will turn the power to the unit on and off when the thermostat calls for heat.  The blowers are 115v.  Does anyone know what I need here?  Thanks!

I carry thermostats that u simply plug them into the wall, and then plug your unit heater into them. They work really nice and no special wiring is required.   You can set them by timer, for example u can have your shop 70 m-f from 8-5 and 45 the rest of the time.  They aren't cheap but once you figure you don't have to buy relays and all that junk, there worth it, especially when u can be upend running instantly

A fan center relay is all you need to hook a thermostat up to it. It has 120v in, 120v and connections for a low voltage thermostat.
Here is an example from a quick search. http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONEYWELL-R8239A1052-FAN-CENTER-/200821025149?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2ec1dda97d (http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONEYWELL-R8239A1052-FAN-CENTER-/200821025149?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2ec1dda97d)

In my garage I used an old electric baseboard thermostat, it has 2 wires and I just broke the hot (black) wire with it and it works fine.

Thank you guys! Would I be able to just use one of the fan relays to run two units?

If you want them both to come on together and the combined load is less than the relay rating.
