Post by: lasor1 on October 13, 2012, 04:18:07 PM
Hello friends I was thinking about adding a rain cap to my new owf and was wondering if other people has any pros and cons on the rain cap creating more creosote? Thanks!

no rain cap.  Use a 5 gallon bucket when not running.  All it does is the creosote collects on it then drips all over your shack.  Tried it and hate it.

Use a rain cap........    Why not?

Ones with spark arrestors are more apt to clogged but I have used them. Regular rain caps have no adverse affects.  In times of heavy rain or snow you can still get enough inside an un covered chimney to get water in there.  Now if your blower was on, it would likely never matter, but if your stove is idling or been idle for a while, it can cause issues

I have one no problems, and I don't have to get a ladder out to cap it

Put one on my first OWF 10 years ago.  Screen plugged up first season. Threw it off and haven't used one over the last 9 years.
Hang a bucked over chimney when not running.
If you want to use one, take the screen out and probably would be ok.
