i would scrape the interior fire box along with the sides at the end of the season.  ash is your call, i wait til its almost ready to come out the door or when it restricts the size of the fire i need .  make sure you take a day or two a week and rake the ash stiring up all the unburned chuncks of wood, i do it on the weekends, it will reduce your ash alot.

I rack the ashes around and bring all the hot coals to the front every morning & evening. I fired my stove up first of Oct and have not removed any ashes so far, but from dec on maybe once a month.

The more you stir your ashes the less you'll have to remove.  There is a lot of unburned gases and particles hidden down under your ash bed in the Central Boilers.  I burn a lot of wood and have yet to remove any ashes yet this year (Probably today will take a few out).

My set point on the stove is 175-165. I try to add just enough wood that when I wake up in the morning or come home in the evening the temp is around 164-155. That way alot of the bigger coals have had time to burn down. Then I rake all the hot coals forward. I also think this saves on the amount of wood I burn.
