Who uses ash troll? I’ve been hearing I can buy some stuff at the local feed mill like powdered lime to sprinkle in the fire box to help keep the crap off the sides and top of the burn box. So what is everyone been using? I have been using ash troll every other day one scoop
thanks Don L

There are products out there, one called pro former is from empyre, but I don't use it currently, it's primary purpose is to keep creosote from sticking to anything, I don't see why anyone would need it in a conventional model

I figured it was similar to pro former, it puts a coating on the metal and breaks down the creosote too
What's the deal with the lime? Does it help?

Do you know that lyme is the same as ashtrol for a fact? Or is that just your opinion or guess? In my Classic, I experimented with using it for a couple weeks, then not using it for a couple of weeks. I could visually see less creosote build up on my firebox walls when using ashtrol. I also was told it would neturalize the acids in the ash reducing metal corrosion. I have to say, I had no corrosion in the firebox even after 7 years of use, so it must have been working. I continue to use ashtrol in my Eclassic, but don't really don't see that it reduces creosote build up in firebox, but I do continue using for its neturalization of the ash acids. My Eclassic is a big investment, ashtrol small price to pay for extra longevity of it in my mind, along with the consistant maintenance procedures listed in the owners manual. I'm into my 3rd season with my E2400 and the firebox still looks great, with no signs of corrosion.

I'm not buying that at all.... I would think ash troll is designed like empyres pro former, it makes it where the creosote can't even stick to the steel, if it does, it falls off as soon as you touch it. Also it changes the way the creosote looks and feels, makes it drier and flakier

That link was no different than this whole thread... Guessing and speculation. That's like saying this smells like unleaded gas, looks like gas, must be unleaded gas. Could be leaded gas lol

Now kids...lets play nice ::)
I have done a lot of "google" research on this topic and it appears the "proprietary" ingredients are generally a combination of calcium hydroxide, sodium bicarbonate, and magnesium hydroxide. These chemicals are commonly known as slaked lime, baking soda, and epsom salts.

Well generally if walks like duck and quacks like a duck its usually a duck, take your self for example if you sound like a dick and act like a dick my guess is your probablly a dick LOL
Real classy there buddy, real classy
I was looking for scientific data, not more of a rumor mill, but since you'd assume go on pure rumor and speculation, I understand your lack of desire to know the truth.

Somewhere CB has paperwork saying what's in it, they would have to have that information available at someone's request

Sometimes my son(he's almost 11) sits on my lap and reads some of the posts from the different folks on the few forums that I am a member of. Thankfully, he is staying over night with one of his friends tonight.
I'm glad that I don't have to try and explain to him why adults feel the need to communicate with one another in a manner as you've chosen.
If you feel Scott is in error or that his comments are out of line, please, in the future communicate your concerns with a moderator, or even shoot Scott a pm and voice your concerns to him personally.
I can see no legitimate excuse for unnecessary name calling just because one person's opinion is different than another's.

as you know marty i help mod at "the other" site and that is enough for me. i did mod here at one time (before the place was sold) this is why all sites need a mod or two..some one who frequents the site often and can for the most part "let things run" but on occoasion a member or two may need to be reined in a bit and reminded that maybe they are getting off topic or a little rude and perhaps if they are upset or can't agree to disagree they should maybe go to private chat and sort things out.
the forums are for sharing info and yes, they are for disagreeing on some things as well, but disagreement can be civil and should be, in a public forum. i have been a member here almost since its birth and it has been a great place for learning and sharing an abundance of info on the operation and trouble shooting of OWB's. there are dealers here who scared me when they first showed up and i had fears of dealer pitting against dealer and owners of those brands taking sides and such...i was pleasantly surprised to see this did not happen and to this day i don't believe any dealers have bickered (in the open forum at least) now i would hate to see any name calling or badgering of any of the members here and i for one think if a couple of "non power hungry" mods were appointed they could make sure that topics were discussed in a plite manner (even if dissagreements arise, as long as they stay civil i would consider that good information could come from those discusions) the site at owbinfo is modded

Is yours coated in shiny black creosote that flakes and drops into the fire? I don't know how you can get that stuff off.

Seems to me that creosote could be considered a protector of the firebox metal. Loss of efficiency maybe, at the expense of protection perhaps. Ideas?

Creosote is corrosive in itself, its not a protector

As is fire. As is heat. What is worse?

Creosote
I have a sunbeam coal furnace in my shop that was built in 1890, it has been used by my grandpa every winter since about 1951, before that it was being used every year in an huge home. The fire we keep in it is always so hot that creosote never forms, it simply can't.
After 120 years, I think it will go that many more, so the fire/heat doesn't appear to be to corrosive to me.
-
Enough, Scott. You are too ignorant and full of yourself to debate. Spread yourself among those who will tolerate you. Disguise it as you must, you are not here merely to help. You feed here.
Besides, coal stoves are cast iron, as are many older stoves. The iron we have in our wood furnaces are not. Apples and oranges. Different color. Color me gone. You win and have run off another.
-
I'm about done with this place........
I have no idea what your even mad about, I wasn't preaching from a pew, simply talking, we burn wood in it all the time, and yes It is cast, but I was just saying I think creosote is something we don't want
Would someone explain how I said anything out of line?
I was only saying that I don't think heat and fire alone is all that hard on steel, I guess I need to put question marks after every thought I have
It's like texting folks, you can't understand or figure out what tone or mood a person typing is trying to imply.
I will say that I am sorry I offended you, that was not my intent and I'm about as soft hearted as they come, I guess that's not relayed through a computer very well
Today alone I've spent over 2 hours on the phone with forum members just talking about there installs and trying to help someone... I love it here, but I think I'm done, nothing bothers me more than stuff like this
-
I only read the last few replies to this and not sure what made him go on that rant.
All I know is every large OWB MFG says creosote causes corrosion and will void the warranty if you don't keep it as clean as reasonable possible. (Meaning running at proper temperature and scraping off excessive buildup if burning wood that is too wet, etc)

Marty I agree.....if this was planetsand (I am a mod on there) he would be banned for couple days and that is a payed site......My son or yours do not need to here or read that....I respect everyone just like, i like to be respected.....I agree with you. 100% sorry scott you have to be talked to that way.....

Some people should not ask questions if they don't want a response :bash:
Don't let someone run you off, smile and roll on , usually they loss any way ;D

I missed the discussion, but I just purchased two bottles of ashtrol. I haven't used it since December because the furnace was burning hot enough to avoid creosote, but now that is warming up, I am planning on adding everyday or so. It seemed to work in the fall...very anecdotal evidence I know.

I am not normally on the CB section. Where does one get ashtrol? How about the lime? Any particular type? And how much lime would you use per day? I have a mild steel owb and have lots of creosote in the burn chamber and especially in the induction tube that I cannot seem to ever get out. I have learned ine thing this year, don't burn cedar. Holy crap will that gum stuff up even being three + years drying. Should have seen that coming, but totally missed it.
Scott, what is the stuff you gave Marty to use in the general discussion?

Just a private labeled product called "pro former" it was made for empyre dealers and we have been selling it, so far everyone is very pleased. I think Marty said the tub should last him close to 2 winters at the rate he's going, pm me if you'd like a quote on it
