Title: shaver not heating domestic water

so its 50 degrees in northern illinois, over the last few days ive had trouble getting enough hot water to shower with. my supply lines coming into house are hot, my furnace is keeping temp and my bsmt floor is warm but domestic water is iffy. seems like this happens when it starts to warm out. any ideas? also smoke from chimmney is grey/black not white.

What kind of heat exchanger for the water?
