I thought I would use some of that expanding spray foam, or maybe just pack the hole with some kind of hydraulic grout.

I use hydraulic cement, looks good,no leaks, inexpensive, use a wet rag to clean the patch area up and it will blend right into the wall when dry

I've done excavating and septic system installs for years.

Whenever we switch out old cast iron waste pipe for pvc through foundation I always use the Quickcrete Hydralic cement.

The stuff seals beautifully and is more of a putty consistency rather than mushy cement. You can really press it in all around the pipe.

Just keep in mind it hardens very quickly. Like 10 minutes quickly. Make sure you are all prepped and ready to slop cement before you mix it. Only do a small amount in a 5 gallon bucket at a time. The stuff is like Bondo with too much hardener. It locks up quick.

Is this hydraulic cement something available at a local big box store?  I've not seen it and always used foam, no issues but I like the idea of it

It works well and can be purchased at Hd or any masonry supply house, I personnally prefer to stay out of the box stores and shop at the real supply houses

A supply house, I've never even heard of such things down here lol

There is a few mom and pop hardware stores, usually one in every little town but they rarely have any fittings over 3/4" and def no pex stuff

There is a plumbing store I use when I'm in the area, but it's 2 hours away..

I have never bought Pex in the stick form. I think my Vega- Fosta Pex is retail around $1.80 per foot and comes in a roll of 100 or 500 feet.

Scott, any hardware store or lumberyard should have hydraulic cement.  It doesn't have to be the Quikrete brand (although I will agree that it works about the best) - most all of it that I've used will seal up fine.

I foamed my lines, let them dry, then dug out ~3" on the inside and outside of the foundation wall and used hyd. cement for the finish.  Working good so far, and no leaks.
