Title: Earth Wood Help

I bought a previous generation Earth Wood Mountain Man 500 and have a question.

The current model shows the supply coming out toward the top rear of the unit and returning toward the bottom. My unit, the supply would actually be going across the top at the rear. Does this sound right?

 Your supply should come from the bottom and return into the top.

I disagree, supply from top return to bottom, hottest water is on top, more heat to the radiation, cooled water return to the bottom less chance of shocking the boiler. Go with the manufacturers suggestion as deviating from the installation manual may void any warranty

Just by the way earth shipped my rancher I would have to agree with slimjim on this subject but I am no expert on the subject.

I agree with the manufacture's recommendations and the site shows the supply going in the back at the top. My model has the top pipe going across the top not into the back. I am thinking it might be above the water level. Am i over thinking this??

If the top pipe is above your water level which I would hope not there would be no way to supply the pump from the top. Aslong as return temp do not go to low (140) returning water to the bottom it should not be a problem.

Just like a hot water tank, the hot coming out at the top and the cool going in lower.

I have been discussing this issue with earth a few times, one of them said they had some issues and they were solved by putting the supply off of the bottom

It makes 0 sense to me to pull water from the top because its hotter, on many home built stoves I've seen water 185 at the top and 140 other places, a disaster looking for a place to happen.  Returning the cold ware to the top is un natural and creates more balance inside the water tank.  Ideally we'd love to see the whole tank be the same temperature, not 180 here and 160 there and so on, anytime water is laying in there at potentially below 140 were asking for problems
