We just put in a OWB and instead of putting water from our well, which has a very high calcium level, I used distilled water. I did put antifreeze in it at the ratio suggested by the company also because there are times during the winter that it will be down for a few weeks whlie Iam out of town and not able to feed it daily. I did this after changing out a faucet that was in place for 2 years and having the inlet valve nearly closed from build up. Has anyone else done this or have I went too far?

I guess my question is how much did it cost you to fill your boiler up with distilled water? I have read on this that some have filled there boiler with rain water due to a high mineral water....You most likely saved yourself a headache with clogging up the exchanger etc, etc..

It was about $70 to fill it up with the distilled water. Biggest pain was getting all the plastic containers out to the road to put in the recycling bin.

I'm just glad you didn't throw them in the boiler.

I attended every public hearing and workshop that our state had on wood boilers a few years back, you have no idea what some folks were burning. cut up truck tires, asphalt roofing shingles, trash and dead farm animals, what a shame that we can no longer sell the conventional wood boilers here thanks to a few NITWITS

I was told by another person who has the same boiler I do that he does burn almost everything. Tires, diapers, trash. No thanks, that's why I pay Allied Waste once a month. I would rather throw it away than to burn it and cause more issues. All the powers that be need are a few people doing stupid stuff like that to ruin it for the rest of us. Also, I'm sure that it can't be good on the firebox and rest of the boiler to burn that.

Ive heard many stories outside of this forum of what people burn..No wonder the outdoor wood boiler is on the hot seat..Having a gasser..It dont matter..People still abuse it..

I know a farmer in my area purchased a great big owb, cant remember the brand. He spent almost 25k for this stove. Well he decided to burn a tractor tire in the thing, well lets just say it did not pan out for him well. It fried his stove within minutes and they would not back there warranty due to that reason. I wouldnt have backed it either that is just plain dumb to burn a tire in a owb. Imaging choking on loosing 25k within a month of purchasing???
