Iset the t stat in my home to 74 and it heats it to that but it must be cooling down real quickly.....it runs about every 10 mins..stops for 10 then starts back up....Now at night ill cut it back to 65 and it wont come on for a couple of hours. house was built in 1901 and has new windows but im guessing the insulation isnt up to par? other than that its making plenty of hot water ad keeping my uninsulated pole barn at 50. was 08 degrees outside this morning.

Welcome to owning an old home, mine is 220 years old and 2500 sqft of heating. I assume you have forced hot air? Last night with temps around 15 and the house temp set to 70* my fha runs 5 minutes on/ 11 minutes off. I reinsulated the attic this year to R50 which has helped immensely as well as insulated and air sealed 75% of the exterior walls up stairs. Downstairs I have not touched yet and have alot of cold air infiltration around the sill plate and up into the walls. I will take care of it eventually but for now I will just burn more wood.

yeah i never really noticed it before but then again this is the first time my forced air furnace has been used in 5 years..I heated with a wood stove in the house....90 in one room 80 in the next..LOL....but that makes me feel better. I was even thinking of moving my t stat because its in the livingroom not to far from the main heater vent that is directly off the main trunk of the furnace and thought it was catching to much of the heat output. thanks for your input hondaracer2004

its normal chilly... u can also adjust the variance on some of your indoor stats, its likely set to 1 degree, u could adjust to 2 or more with the right stat, still dont amount to much

Try what scott suggested. This is what I do with my tstat in my house and garage. I set it to have a 1 deg swing. So when I have it set on 72, it will get down to 71 and then kick on. It adds quite a bit to the idle time.
