Title: Pile Estimation Guess
Post by: CountryBoyJohn on February 15, 2014, 04:00:12 PM
Ok, this one is for guys with grapple experience, but I'll take guesses from anyone. These are some pictures of my work over the last two weekends. It may be hard to see the diameters of the trees, but the largest is about 18". I need guesses on how many cords I am going to get out of this! I'll post the answer when I get it cut, split, and stacked!

The first picture is the first half at the top of the hill. The second picture is from the end of the pile looking up the hill.

Hard to guess with it that spread out, bottom pic with truck in it looks like a lot more wood. 5 cord is my guess.

My guess is 9 cords.

Both pictures are taken looking the exact same direction. The top pic is just halfway up the hill, about halfway into the pile.

Clearing a fence row?

I guess around 7 or 8 cords.

Yeah, dozer coming any day. Had to drop them quick, limb them, then pull them out. Worked out nicely just being able to leave the limbs.

Is this like guessing how many jellybeans are in a jar?  does the closest guess get a prize?  maybe a free cord?..... ;)

Wood is so deceiving..Only true way of knowing is to cut it , stack it and measure it

Well, finally got it all cut, split, and stacked. 4 cords. Not as much as I was expecting, but it'll keep me warm for quite a while!

Nice!.. Least your ahead of the game! Im itchy to start my wood up..Just waiting for some more snow to melt and the mud to dry up somewhat before I take tractor back there

Oh, Mr. MattyNH, I'm more ahead than that. That 4 cord actually put me right at 10 cords ready for next year. I have a huge hackberry trunk and a hard maple trunk to go and I'm done for the year! I'll likely be at 12 cords. Burning mixed in coal next year I feel like I really could have 2 years in that stack!

Nice!..Good for you…At least you won't be needing to do wood during the summer months!!
