Title: stihl chain saws
Post by: Neal on March 01, 2014, 02:44:07 PM
Have been using an 038 AV super Pro for several years.  The throttle handle broke completely off today. It had been partially broken but I had repaired with some pop rivets and soffit material.  That lasted 2 or 3 years. Anyone know whether parts are still available for that model saw?  I can get spark plugs, air cleaners, chain, bars etc.

Yes, EBAY.  Used parts will be a fraction of the cost of new, even if they area available.  You might even get lucky with some NOS (new old stock) that has been setting on a shelf for years and being discounted.  You might also look up the manual.  Some of the saws have the same frame, and if so, you can sometimes get parts from a different size saw that still fit. (029 and 039 are similar for example).

Good luck.

One of my saws jumped under the tractor wheel in the summer and broke the top handle, brake handle and decompression valve. Went to price parts at the local dealer and they keep old trade-ins that had similar fates or blown up and they sold me used parts at a much better price even though new parts were available. Good to find customer service like that.

There's a couple real good saw forums that someone should have ANYTHING you need. I used one to restore an old 2 man saw couple years ago. Amazing what people have available.

well I was able to get the part for the 038.  Just need to find the time to switch the part over.
177 is a whole lot cheaper than an new saw for sure.

Has anyone heard of porting out tbe muffler on your chainsaw. I heard it helps with the power and better fuel economy.  I have a Stihl ms 362.

Yes it can be done but not worth the effort on that model. A 361 yes. Any mod on these newer saws will use MORE fuel. Pull your plug and you will see how lean they already run to meet EPA specs. I would not turn a nut on your saw till you've read ArboristSite dot kom. And ONLY pay attention to a few of builders posts and info. There are way too many wannabes trolling there. How much of a gain you will see versus someone who cuts for a living is small in many cases if noticeable at all. Just be real careful. It's not just cutting or drilling a few holes, limiters have to be removed and a good ear to tune.

automan77 -  Have you tried your ms311 yet?  I have one, bought it with a 24 inch bar and I love the thing.  It's easily powered through anything I put under it.  Roger
