Title: grate spacing

Well I am behind on getting this furnace made but I need to know what is the average spacing on grates.I plan to install Water filled grates in the burn chamber.I need to decide on a good size spacing..I was looking at 1/2 to 1" spacing.what is anyone's opinions?

I would stick with 1/2" or less pending on how many gaps there will be.  If you go 1" you will end up with hot coals dropping into the ash pan.

There will be There will be 5 tubes with spaces inbetween them.I I couldn't decide if 1" would be too much of a gap or not.I was leaning more to the 1/2" gap when laying it out on the bench.I am trying to do all my preliminary drawings so I can order all the materials.
