Title: push fittings on 1" pex
Post by: kjw58 on September 08, 2010, 07:09:43 PM
Just wondering if anyone has any experience using the new push fittings (aka sharkbite, gatorbite ect. ) on 1" pex lines from boiler.  I know they are a little pricey, but are they safe to use ?  and will I have to worry about them coming apart ?  Thanks

As far as a good fitting, yes, one of the best!  However, who can afford many of them?  Not me.  If I could pay that much for fittings I could pay the elec company too haha

I've read that after several heating and cooling cycles, they tend to start leaking.  PEX expands and contracts with heating and cooling, so it's going to move a little in the fitting too.  The clamps, compressions, and expanders don't allow the PEX to move on the fitting.  While most PEX manufacturers say the Sharkbites can be used, I wouldn't use them for every fitting for long term use.  They are very pricey if you're doing your whole setup with them.

I've used one inch sharkbite elbows a few times in hard to reach locations and I use a lot of 3/4 sharkbites when making connections at the hot water heater and I have never had a problem with them starting to leak over time.

lot of people using pex/sharkbites for new and old construction for years now, mostly so scumballs won't steal it like copper!
