Title: Low temp aquastat
Post by: american-pacemaker on August 06, 2014, 08:32:17 AM
Hey SlimJim on my 250 install you said to plumb in an aquastat for low temp shut down of the blower fan. Where should this be plumbed in and how do I wire it in the back of the boiler? Also I am hooking up the supply to the top of the boiler and the return to the bottom of the boiler do you use the connections on just one side of the boiler or one from each side ?

I like to stagger the connections for better circulation, the aqua stat gets strapped to the supply, I'll send you a picture of it on Cabo's boiler we are just finishing up on it

Here you go, where the brown wire comes back from the safety switch to the junction box and connects to the 2 black wires that go to the blower and actuator, seperate the brown from the 2 black, the brown goes up to the R terminal of the aqua stat and the 2 blacks to the W terminal, set the aqua stat @ 160, this kills the blower and actuator at below 160 degrees, you can also wire a 60 minute timer in parralel to bypass the aqua stat, hopefully you will excuse the mess, we haven't put it all back together yet.

Thanks for the pics. I don't mean to sound dumb but why would you need to over ride the second aquastat with a timer ? The install looks really nice.

Simply to bypass it when re firing the boiler, I used to simply explain how to reset the aqua stat but then the home owner would forget to reset it after the temp came back up, the timer simply makes it easy and eliminates those oh crap moments

Oh OK now that makes perfect sense. Thanks
I would like to post pics of my progress but when I try to post it tells me my pics are to many megs and I cannot get them to resize.

You are more than welcome, give me a call if you need part #s, I'm sure that Bell Simons in Albany has them on the shelf if you need.

Will a SPDT 60 minute timer work ? Is a Honywell # L6006C1018 the right one ? That is a HI/LOW limit SPDT aquastat.

Yes and yes

Would you go above the stainless damper box and then down to the return on the right side or under the box ? Should there be temp gauges on both lines at the back of the boiler and at the heat exchanger also ?  We had talked about putting a Y strainer before the
heat exchanger and you said to add a bypass. Would going to a 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 strainer eliminate the need for a bypass ? The 1 1/4
is rated for 8 gpm and the 1 1/2 is 10 gpm.
Thanks

Yes I would go above the stainless box, Yes I like to put temp gauges on supply and return, and yes I would still put in the bypass because folks forget to clean it and if it plugs without you realizing it, the circulator could be damaged.

Ok thanks. I am trying to get all the outside stuff done on the boiler so if the weather turns to crap before the inside is done I will
be ok.

Slimjim, is it worth replacing the black 90's on the return and supply on the back of the boiler with unions and long radius 90's ?

I normally use those 90's on the boiler and convert directly from them to copper with a copper X male pipe union, they are very pricey but make for a nice job, they stock them in Albany, if you would like to use them let me know and I will have them put it on my account as they require a license to purchase at the supply house, you can pick them up or have them shipped directly to you.

Thanks Slimjim. I have access to getting the fittings but I appreciate that. I was not sure if it is worth changing for the flow of
the long radius 90's.

I have always been fine with those but I would not add any more close 90's than needed!
