Title: Social security number
Post by: pops69 on August 18, 2014, 09:16:09 AM
Rory from Portage and Main just called and said my 2840 was getting ready to load on the truck.
He also ask for my social security #, a little worried about that, he said he needed it for customs.
Anyone else go through this coming across the border?
Thanks

10/4.  They need to verify the individual and legal shipping address of the customer.

Sorry, just saw this, had terrible service at the show, yes it is legit, they need a SS# to cross the border since ICE got total control, you can jump a southern border and it's OK but you better not try to get away with anything from the north.

pops69,

I'd be prepared to pay whatever your state's sales tax might be.
Three of us bought 250's back in the fall of '11 and before fall of '12 came around, I had a letter in my hand from the socialist state of Michigan saying that I owed a 6% "import tax" ($1800 bucks, $600 for each boiler) on all three boilers.
The "import tax" (or fee, can't remember what they called it) just happened to be the same amount as our states sales tax.
I wouldn't want to dissuade anyone from buying a P&M. They are the best built boiler out there.
I do want everyone to understand, however, that when you give your SS# to ANY company that imports goods from Canada, you might be responsible for the fees associated with said imports, depending on what your state's tax laws are. I checked with my tax preparer, as well as our states attorney, and both confirmed I was responsible and there was positively no way I could get out of paying.
I was very fortunate that the other two guys accepted their responsibilities and paid their share of the tax burden.
Even with the extra almost $600/stove, we still got a good deal on great boilers.

Not just Michigan, but Indiana also expects you to report any out of state purchases on your IT-40, this includes Amazon, Ebay, or any other out of state internet purchase. Of course since there isn't any customs paperwork on the majority of it you are expected to be honest in your reporting  ;D

I was under the impression that if you ordered something online and as long as it did not ship  from within your state or the vendor does not have a location in your state there was no sales tax because the sale was not in your state. Guess no matter what they are gonna get ya

Technically an out of state seller doesn't collect sales tax on your purchase, however you are supposed to report the out of state purchase on your Indiana tax return along with the price you paid so you can then pay the sales tax that wasn't collected at the time of the sale. BS if you ask me.

Online orders allow the dealer to not have to collect the sales tax, the customer is still required to pay it in the state they live in. If some of you are not filing your sales tax on items ordered online I would advise against talking about it online. Technically you are evading taxes.

;) just like Burger King

You know a few things about that, is it any wonder that after being vilified by social media, the news and the feds that any corporation wouldn't be looking to move to a friendlier environment? Let alone the hundreds if not thousands of new regulations that are put in place every year?

Instead of having one of the highest corporate tax rates in the world, Canada has lowered theirs over the years to keep their business in Canada, attract business back to Canada and to attract new business. Seems to be working eh?

there are dozens  companies that have  left  Canada  in the  last  couple  decades  to " go south " to pay  wages

the  Burger King  buyout of Tim Hortons  was all over the news  here  for a week
