Title: pump plumbing help
Post by: flashpnt on September 24, 2014, 09:35:23 AM
On my owb i have  (1) 1" intake and discharge , the pump is at the stove.
last year i used 3/4 pex to the first heat ex-changer.
Then out of the first to a second heat ex-changer.
Out of second and back to stove.
is this correct or do i split it at the pump and make 2 runs to both ex-changers and 2 runs back . Or split at stove and run 2 pumps and 2 runs .
first run is 25 ft from stove to house . second run is about 125 ft away from stove.
last year 2nd run did good as long as stove was 180ish under that it was kinda cool
thanks

What size piping is on the heat exchanger? it seems like an awful lot to be running on a 3/4 inch line, have you checked your temp differential between your supply and return at the boiler while it is under full load?

both are 3/4   ,   second run is only heating 600 sq ft  with a 12x12  exchanger.
I installed it last year made my lines  insulated pex inside black drain pipe ,in December it filled up with water so heat loss was crazy high.
Going to redo it with good line now.

If you are re doing the lines, Please look at Logstor, as expensive as it is, it the the least expensive pipe you will ever buy because it is a once in a lifetime purchase!

You will be fine with a single loop of Logstor!

I wish I would have known that Logstor was that flexible. I had to replace my line about 8 years ago. CB used a 2 line system in a 6" dia. insulated Styrofoam tube. It did not have a oxygen barrier and the pex turned into a line that was as brittle as glass. I installed the line in a 7" sewer pipe in case I would have to replace it, that was a good decision. Dealer came with the new line similar to Logstor but not very flexible. I didn't have a choice at the time, I got it for the cost of the new line minus the cost of the old line. Dealer brought it on a trailer with a 15' dia. coil. Unrolled out it wanted to curl back up. It is a good pex line and well insulated but you can't bend a 8' piece. Just wish I would have know about Logstor.

Logstor is probably less flexible than the stuff you have woodbutcher I'm not totally confident on that since I don't know exactly what you have but from what I have read logstor needs a 3 foot radius to bend.

I thought Logstor was more like a 5' radius to bend?

Wood Butcher -> All preinsulated pipes (Logstor, Uponor Ecoflex, Thermopex, etc) are SUPER fun  :bash: to try and uncoil (NOT); especially the shorter the length you try to bend.
