yup, it's in demand this year.  I know a lot of people ran out last year. I should be okay as long as we don't get hit like last winter plus some.

So, I am going to pick up a few slabwood bundles. They are 10 feet long and probably 3.5 feet in diameter. They are from a local Amish saw mill. I can get soft for $10 and hard for 20.  The Amish guy said that he wouldn't load a bundle in a half-ton truck anymore because he has seen too much stuff break.

Thoughts?  I know this has been discussed in a previous thread, but we may be talking 10 cords for $200!  I am between Big Rapids and Grand Rapids, MI. If anyone is interested I can tell you where the sawill is in Coral, MI.

We are new to this so don't have much experience but I have been putting my split wood along with slabs and so far no problems in fact working good but only been running a week so use my experience with caution

Guys here are raising their prices a bit. One friend of mine was getting $40/face cord last year  (not delivered price) and he went up to $45 for this year.

Matty, you really getting 8.5 cords out of a straight truck? If your paying 1200 for an 8.5 cord load that is nuts! I get about 7.5 cords out of my straight truck loads. Just got next years wood dropped off last week. $700.

who did you buy from that sells it at that price?? I absolutely know no one that is at that price.. I literally open the phone book calling around because the people(s) that I buy from couldn't get wood..Wmur channel 9 did a story not too long ago about firewood shortage.. Your lucky you didn't have a problem getting wood.. This fall was very frustrating for me.. I'd call everyone and get the same story.. Months behind customer orders, all the wood goes to the mills, etc..

I get it from a local guy who logs for himself. Started buying from him a couple years ago and hes been great to me. I always have to give him a couple of months notice to get on the list but he always has wood for me. He told me that he likes to see people burning wood for fuel and would rather help someone heat their home then bring the wood to a mill so he never sells the hardwood to the mills. I have bought from some different guys in the past but this guy treats me very well so I continue to buy from him. I have a large company, JS Logging, in the next town up that I would give a call to if I ever ran into an issue. They drive by my house constantly with hardwood grapples. Not sure what they are getting for a price, I should check with them.

Last year is the only time I have bought wood and paid $550 for a tri-axle  load, approximately  9 cords so $62 a chord. Checked this year it's $675 from same guy so prices have went up and I'm 20 minutes  from a paper mill so demand must be up.

I doubt my guy would head over your way that far, he's a pretty small operation just working for himself as lives up in franklin. I would try JS logging. They are a big company.

As of today, $120 per cord, 14 cord load of clean oak logs delivered (90 miles), in WI, up $23 from 2012. He said, pulp & sawmills are paying these prices because of extremely hard winter & wet summer, so wood is in high demand.

Split seasoned hardwood going for $175-$250 for a full cord here in Eastern Wisconsin.  You can get a semi load of 8' lengths for around $100 per cord but there is usually about 10-12 cord minimum.  I have 27 Acres of hardwoods but I only cut dead or down trees out of my woods.  Out by our family cabin you can buy a permit for $20 and cut up to 10 cord per year on the county land.  Those trees also have to be down or dead and it must all be cut to lengths of 4' or less.

MAtty, last I knew you can do that in New Hampshire. You need a permit, it is 3 cord max and it is only in certain areas.

Matty if its anything like Minnesota you would go to the county forestry department. I have a permit it is good for 20 cord as well but its for a certain area and on county land in MN they give 1 permit per area so if a mess is left they can look you up. We can also get permits for logged areas on state land as well.
$25 for 10 cord on county and $30 for 10 cord on state land

I called my log supplier earlier this week and inquired about a grapple load of logs either this Fall or earlier next Spring.  He said quality logs are hard to come by lately, that I should check back in 2 to 3 weeks to see if he has anything for me.  Anyway I inquired about cost.  The last load of logs I purchased from him cost me $1200.00 for a 12 cord load; that was 2 years ago.  This time around due to hard to find quality logs it will cost $1500.00.  Unfortunately, no one else in my area sells quality log length firewood.  I guess I'll have to sit and wait to see what he says in 2 to 3 weeks from now.  Roger

Prices here are $350-$400 cord for delivered seasoned oak, but I don't think there is any dry oak to be bought.  I sold a buddy a cord last year at $150.00.  He told me last week that he thinks he ripped me off.  I guess it looks that way, although he did pick it up and prices were $150-200 delivered last year, so I am ok with that.

Matty, the permit for cutting on county land is available on our county's website.  They call it a fuelwood permit.

I got 2 semi loads last spring, logger friend needed $$$ (think I paid like $100 or $150 CASH/cord, 8' sticks) and I requested/got some junky ash  and maple mixed togther.  When I say junky, I mean junky for a mill, but great for firewood; the sticks were any where from 2" up to about 12", and either forked, twisted, split of slightly bowed.

Logger said the mill did not want the logs (or were not going to pay him enought to make it worth his time/monety) &  he already had the logs stacked in the landing

**Also nice to help out a family friend and small business owner

Yes, that's a truck and trailer cost.  2 years ago the guy guaranteed 12 cord per load but when I finished cutting, splitting and stacking it there was 13 1/2 cord.
