Title: digital water temp gauges
Post by: caper on November 03, 2014, 05:35:41 PM
does anyone know if there is such thing as a digital water temp gauge I can buy for the supply and return lines and maybe even the diff zone lines,i have two regular ones hooked into the copper pipes but they suck, dont give accurate temps, just want something plain and simple that will give the real temp....in digital, maybe something that just attaches to the pipe or something.please tell here is,plus I need them to set my mixn valve temps or whats the sense of having them.

What do you have now? can they be calibrated/adjusted? look on the end of the stem, if there is a slotted screw, they can be adjusted

Something like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/50-110-c-Temp-Gauge-0-56-Red-LED-Digital-Color-Temperature-Display-Panel-Meter-/390959933816?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5b07072978 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/50-110-c-Temp-Gauge-0-56-Red-LED-Digital-Color-Temperature-Display-Panel-Meter-/390959933816?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5b07072978) is about as cheap as you're gonna get, I've seen em in fahrenheit as well, just need a 12 volt transformer. Not saying how accurate they are or how long they might last, but it's cheap.

Or you could go as fancy as something like this: http://www.controlbyweb.com/five-input/ (http://www.controlbyweb.com/five-input/) and monitor your temps from your laptop/PC/smartphone.

I just received a set of dual digital thermometers.  Got them from ambient weather.com (http://ambient weather.com).  If you do a search for Taylor 1442 you will find them.  I am going to install them today and will let you know how they work

I bought a couple these, one for behind the boiler & one for inside the house, seem to work well, shipping is a killer from Canada.

Got the Taylor 1442 installed this AM and as of right now I'm not having too much luck.  They are reading approx. 30 degrees off from the dial thermo.  I have 1 probe under my pipe insulation and the other taped to the copper pipe.  I need to do a little research but I have a feeling it my have something to do with getting a reading through copper.

When I installed my temp sensors, I would have them on identical material & fitting, even then my temps read 7 degrees lower than my aqua-stat read out, I concluded for the difference in temps were that my sensors & the aqua-stat sensor were in two different locations, about 3 feet apart.

The $4 is the shipping cost for each additional unit. The seller gave me a break on the price for ordering two units.

They are great sensor/monitors.

I bought 50' of 18 gauge 4 conductor lead cable last week, I'll get that connected so I can have the monitor upstairs & bring the monitor from behind the boiler & mount it to the front of the boiler panel.

Oaky- it looks like those sensors are the strap on type. do u know if you can get probes that thread into a T that is part of the supply and return line?

I'm not sure if this brand is set up for this. There are many other brands that does just that, whether into a deep dry well T or a water submersible T.

Have setup a small computer to collect temps from sensors tie-wrapped onto the pipes. The thing is the temps dont match actual water temps but once you know what the external temp is when internal temp reaching say 185, then you have a baseline of what is 'normal'. So for me external temp of the pipe will be 160 when water temp is 185.

I can then monitor temps of loops in the heating system from my iPad or smartphone. Also have it text or email me when temps get too high or low. For example, if the boiler temp gets too low, I know there is an issue (out of wood, power loss, coal bed too deep and air not getting thru). I have it alert me before it gets too low and I can correct the issue before house temp would drop.
