So our new property is all ours. Lil spot out in the sticks. Perfect. Except, apperently it's been a well used spot to party and other mischief.
Including the making of meth from what we've found.
We had every intention of putting up a gate and the road commission cleared that. But I'm thinking a typical farm gate is getting drove through.
Hence the gate I intend to build, 3" hardened pinstock 14' long. Apx 40" high bit covered by a nice wood fence panel or whatever is cheap.
It will open out only and be mounted and close on 2 big trees. So as not to be pushed in. No trespass signs mounted directly in the middle.
It will eventually be replaced with nice tube gates but, I don't want to buy 30 gates keeping meth heads out.
Any suggestions or opinions?

If you were to have a problem I would set up a game camera then when something happens you have a picture of any vehicle that was at the gate.
-
I also live out in the sticks but everyone here is nice and looks out for everyone of course our nearest neighbor is out across a few fields but still not to much hooligans around here.
-
We are going to bass pro shops to look at trail cams after Christmas, I'm thinking about having 2. One in and one out. So I know who was there and how long etc.
But I want the gate to be an absolute barrier. Sure they can walk around it. But that leaves their vehicles venerable.
I want to nip it in the butt early and fast.
-
I don't blame you one bit if I ever had a problem that's how I would start correcting the problem, its a different world we live in these days I remember growing up and my dad never locked doors or garage doors. I lock my doors always, you just never know these days.

Many times a simple sign will do. "Video Cameras In Use". Anyone doing anything illegal is not going to want to take the risk that they are being video taped.
-
I'm worried about advertising the cameras. They're morons, but not dumb. I see the cameras being stolen. So I'd like the cameras to be discreet and a surprise.
Honestly deep down I want someone to try to drive through the gate. And find their vehicle buried in it. That would make me laugh so hard. And definitely get the point across. And then trail cam pics on top of that, priceless.
-
Just post "Smile your on candid camera" signs sans the actual cameras, give those crap heads, er meth heads a new purpose in life trying to find em.
-
I would start by knocking on the doors of all your neighbors, explain what you suspect is happening, offer them a key to the gate if they feel any need for it and ask for their help in policing it. involving the neighbors instead of shutting them out makes for a much better relationship
-
I guess I'm a lucky person. Where I live my neighbor to the south of me is retired and she and her sisters keep an eye on the place while I'm at work. My neighbor to the north is physically handicapped so he's home all day too and he too keeps an eye on my place while I'm at work. In return I clear their yards of any snow with my green tractor with the 6 foot snow blower on the front end at no charge. I was born at a time when it was expected that you'd help your neighbors. Today, a majority of the people have the me, me, me mentality and could care less about their neighbor. Unfortunately it's going to get worse before it gets better. Roger
-
Roger, you and I would make good neighbors, I feel the same way!
-
That's how it works around here had one of the neighbors set my boiler with his 160hp John Deere loader asked him if he wanted anything for doing it since I interrupted him as it wasn't planned all he said was yes you could come fishing with me this winter!

shotgun and backhoe , shoot shovel and shutup

I keep a separate camera back further watching the first one. Then if it's stolen you may have a picture of the thief.

Just remember that you are your first line of defense don't rely on the cops also dead men can't talk . You feared for your life that's all you say

We haven't been there without carrying. I promise I won't get shot, again, wife carry a 38 special and I carry a .40
Also the daughter brings our heeler (that I'm pretty sure is mixed. With satan lol) the signs are going up this weekend, the cameras are ordered and the "gate" is welded. And I promise you that gate isn't gonna give !
I think we'll make it known that the Tom foolery is over on this land. And if I gotta I'll start dropping big trees across the road. I will not deal with the dumb stuff very long.
-
Ok, anyone want to hear some total bs?
Heck I'll tell you anyway.
County, state, and dnr all gave the ok to put the gate up on our property. We set it 150' in with a trail cam behind.
Go down today after a 1 hour tractor drive to find the gate Mia.
Wtf! Signs reflectors and all. Gone.
Apperently it wasn't safe. Is what we were told by the county sherrif. But not not safe to who is my question? ! Oh I'm sorry I boned trespassing meth heads!
I'm not happy. Kinda sucks we had so many trees fall across the drive today. Was a bit breezy.
-
Wow keep us posted
-
That's amazing that they would actually take the gate off of your property. Sounds like unlawful search and seizure. Did they have a warrant?
-
Wife's headed down to the highway dept tomorrow. And the building commission. Also the state police post and county police. We'll get it figured out.
I'm not sure how someone trespassing has the right to complain about what I'm doing on my property. But we'll figure it out.
I'm still surprised how many big trees are down across the drive since yesterday. Must be beavers ;)
-
Gotta love those beavers with steel teeth!!
-
Ok. Apparently the gate was not safe if someone was to hit it. :\ that's kinda the point of a gate isn't it? To prevent access.
We'll we got everything back, but have to put up a more conventional gate. All the involved departments are fine with us closing it off. But it needs to be a more "friendly" gate. Heck the highway dept even offered to send guys out to help put it up.
Apperently this is all results of a nagging neighbor. And I think I know which one. What's super handy is survey says we own their front yard all the way to the front of the house. If we keep having problems, I might have to bring that up.
-
Wow that's unbelievable ... Someone needs to get a ass beaten
-
A safe gate up here in Maine we put BFRocks set them with a big excavator best of luck

Put your boiler,,, in the rats front yard >:D
you own it up to the porch

You might wanna figure that property line issue out. My dad lost a couple acres over something like that. The place where he grew up in Tennessee. He chased old surveys down but the new surveyors couldn't find the old landmarks. BIG dispute and didn't go in our favor.
-
Google "Manual for Uniform Traffic Control Devices" or MUTCD. If you put "crashworthy" road closed signs/barricades far enough ahead of your gate, then mark the gate with solid red reflective diamonds that should satisfy any reputable county or state highway/road dept. That manual will show you how to close the road using the gate you built. The distance between the crashworthy barricade and the gate is based on either assumed or posted speed limit on the road and possibly how straight or curvy the approach road between them is.
-
Thanks guys. Looking into all your suggestions.
Tomorrow we are putting up a traditional farm gate, much to my dismay, but anything is better then nothing.
County highway did bring out barricade to close it off this week. Which is cool of them. But today we found more meth stuff. I think this is gonna get ugly before it gets better. This will be the 5th time we've found meth making material on the property.

Starke county indiana, pretty much the meth capital of the world, the way I gather it.
Since they took down my "gate" we found 4 more meth related items. In different levels of snow. Wow. I'm glad we're are worried about protecting them.
We have this problem somewhat on my own behalf, it's been raw land since baby jesus made it (that's just an old reference, not religious.) And we knew coming in that everyone used it.
But now that it's owned and being cleared the traffic is falling off fast. And several plate #'s are already reported.
Then damn trees won't quit falling across the road lol.
I'm all for the challenge and it'll be worth it in the end. I been shot twice and am still falling trees and breaking colts. Someonewho wants to use my land for fun? Yeah, they'll learn.
I don't want to come off as a hard ass, but I won't let this dream end without a fight

Imagine that, Starke County, always knew they had a rather large number of uncle dads, guess the meth crap doesn't surprise me either.
Nice thing about being in St Joe county with the state park across the road, don't get much of that meth crap here, get the occasional asshole that confuses our woods with the county dump but thats about it.
-
>:(This whole thing is a bunch of crap. In Missouri we can put any kind of gate on our land we want sheriff cant do anything about it.
-
The way I understood it is, since we closed the road, it needs to be "safe". But if we put our driveway around say a guard rail to close the road we can use whatever for a gate. I kinda get it I guess.
But I've been welding my tail off, still not on anything for myself though. :\ I tried to post a picture but can't figure that out.
