New member here. Been heating with wood for 20 years. Outdoor boiler for 5 years. I'm sure this has been discussed on here but didn't seem to find what I was looking for in search. So thank you in advance for putting up with me.
I heat a 2800 sq foot home, basement, and hot water. I have forced air in house, some baseboards in the basement, a garage style modine heater in part of the basement and a plate exchanger on the h2o. I have a classic 5036 that keeps up but I would like to add a 30x40 shop and garage and hot tub in the future. Been thinking about going to a cl6048. Thinking I would be able to get longer burn times, use crappier wood ie poplar, cedar, pine later in the season than I currently do. I switch to good hardwood when the temps get down to 20 at night now. Part of the thought process comes with the fact that the classics will be discontinued in spring.
Help me pick apart and analyze this decision. Thanks

If you're gonna do it, NOW is the time. You won't have that option in a couple months. I replaced my 6 year old 6048 because I wouldn't have the option much longer. Especially if youre adding more ft2.

I'm heating 4200 sq ft high ceilings on an open hill constant wind winter months installed 6048 fees weeks ago and I am averaging 14-16 hr burns time I'm not loading all the way either below half 24-30" pieces long I'm sure it will change when temps drop but I'll just put alittle extra.. I luv it

I burn pine all year long with no problem the 6048 is the way to go its the same thing as the 5036 so you won't have to learn a new stove !
-
Well I pulled the trigger on a new 6048. Can't wait. What do you guys think a 5 year old 5036 is worth? New one is $6500 plus tax. It's in fine shape, little rust below the door, little soot above it.

I'd say about 3grand..

Big wood. You have a central boiler but sell portage and main???? Please explain
-
I buy and sell and repair used outside wood boilers for the past 8 years as with anything new technology move things in a new direction there stoves in my opinion is one of a good design i run a CB because it is what I could afford at the time it was used i like to help people get on wood keep your money local

Makes sense. Thanks for the explanation. I looked at the portage and main. My big thing about the gasification units is the need to have well seasoned wood. Extra splitting to get it to dry and being a year ahead is not in the cards for me. I burn a lot of junk wood and a fair amount of large chunks of semi wet. I try to eliminate as much handling as possible. Hope I am making the right decision?????

Look at the BL 3444 shaker great model its all about putting the energy in the water and a lot lower stack temperature then a CB 6048 plus the boiler is made to be taken apart if needed just a thought

Got home at 3 this afternoon with the brand new 6048  the water temp in the 5036 was down to 130. Shoveled it out unhooked it and got the new beast up and running. Fire started in the 6048 by 6 and it's up to 120 now and rising. The thing is Giant compared to the old one. I think I will fill it up tonight and maybe again in February. Took forever to fill with water.

Log hog - Fill us in on your first night with the CB6048 when you have a chance. Cold here in New England (NH); few degrees below zero with a stiff north wind. Brrrrrr..... Roger

We're not having the bitter cold here. Last night was 22 and rising. It is 32 out now. The cold will return though. I filed the unit at about 10 pm. Mix of big hardwood and small split pine. I did not pack it tight like I always had to with the 5036 and at 8 am there was enough wood to last the day and make a great hardwood coal bed for the night tonight. Very happy. It took 4 hours to bring the water up from 55 to 185.
Now that the switch is done I can spend the day in the woods running tubing to tap Maple trees

Sweet enjoy it.. Luv mine

Well I have had the new boiler up and running for about two weeks now. I had a 5036 and now 6048. The two major differences I see are burn time and size of log. The weather had been rather mild for our area highs around 30 and lows in the 20. And I was able to get over 24 hours burn time. Heating 2800 ranch, full walk out basement and DHW. In fact I went out of town for a night and loaded it in the morning I left and it was still very full the second evening. I am also able to through in very large diameter logs. I hate splitting big logs, so I had some old birch and oak that was 24 plus stuff and knotty. I cut it in to short pieces 8 inch long or so. And load the chips in. In the old burner I could do this but could not get enough packed in to burn this stuff well. Also the coal bed is enormous compared to the smaller, I know this is management thing. But I like having a bed that never goes cold, helps to dry and burn the bigger stuff. Glad I bought a 6048 before the EPA bans the sale of them.
