Title: Wild Grape Vine
Post by: mlappin on January 06, 2015, 06:02:35 AM
So got into a discussion with a neighbor about wild grapevine, he claims they can climb a tree, personally I've always been told they have to ride it up as the tree grows.

Personally I think I'm right as I spent time every year cutting grapevine and it seems to hold true the bigger the tree the bigger the grapevine. If they can climb a tree then I'm screwed as I'll never get ahead of the damn things.

Grapes do climb the trees to get closer to the sun..They can actually kill the trees like oak and cotton wood by blocking sunlight and saps nutrients

I am screwed also.  I have started cutting and treating the vines, but it is a battle.  They have killed some oaks in my woods.

They do climb trees.  Very invasive plant.  Didn't use to be so bad.

Anyone know how long they take to grow to 1" diameter vines?
