Title: What Gauges should I get
Post by: Ryan on January 06, 2015, 09:25:10 AM
In my previous topic regarding "temperature problems-delta t issues" it sounds like i need to get some gauges to put accurate numbers and troubleshoot correctly.  I dont know why the previous home owner skimped on this part.  What type of gauges should i get and where should i strategically place them? Digital, type with the thermowell, strap on style, ect? Should i put two on the back of the boiler (supply and return) two where it enters the house (supply and return) and two on the house side of the flat plate heat exchanger (supply and return)? Where is the best place to purchase them? thanks

I personally like the old analog dial type gauges (no batteries to die, except in your flashlight when you are trying to troubleshoot of course)

Also if you are running a pressurized system its nice to have a temperature-pressure combination gauge.
   I forget the rules about post to outside websites, but http://www.pexuniverse.com/gauges (http://www.pexuniverse.com/gauges)  I am 90% certain any of these gauges will work

...if you want to put in the minimum # of gauges, I would put a set on the Supply and Return lines from the boiler (as soon as they enter the house) and another set as close to your radiant manifold as possible.
**Gauges as manifold will tell you how much heat you are loosing to radiant application (slab, fan coil, under floor panels, radiators, etc)
**Gauges where lines come in house will tell you the over all load on the OWB

BTW  :thumbup: -> Delta T (in F) x GPM x 500 = BTU/hr
May help to know when figuring out load on OWB

I have the maverick wireless BBQ thermometer set, and couldn't imagine not having it. I purchases mine from ebay very reasonable around $40. I have used mine in multiple areas, but have settled on leaving them on my heat exchanger entry and also of the exit of the heat exchanger. It gives me a good indication if I need to go out to the stove or if can wait for now. Do yourself a huge favor and get them you won't be disappointed. Keep in mind they won't work accurate on pex, find some sort of copper or anything metal to attach them to. I used hvac tape to attach mine works good.
