I've been on that site before and seen that grate system the only problem is dealing with grates I had them on my previous boilers a real pita to much money for me to give it a try...

I dont think Id buy the set up. I may make one though. Looks ez enough. Just wondering why there is no testimonials on its operation?The burning of coal sounds good to me.

Woody did you ever try throwing some coal on top of the wood coals? I have a bag of it laying around was going to give it a shot.. I know it works better if it blows from under neath but i figured throwing on top of the already hot coals might kick up a flame

Its hard to get a perfect look at it because of the picture size but I am 99% sure that those are Hardy Grates. Those are what come in the Hardy furnaces for the bottom.

Which is CRAZYYYYY money. They are cast iron and they warp, you have to flip them a few times a year and eventually they break. I have one original left and two that I have made. Just go to the local steel market and grab 1 inch square solid stock and cut it into the needed lengths and weld it up. Cost about 30 bucks to build a grate and they dont warp or crack. Then just pick yourself up some I beams like what they have it set on. Should cost about $250 in materials to make yourself a set up like that. I think it would work really well with a fan upgrade blowing under it.

is the h4 a gasser or conventional?I think the gasser burns hotter doesnt it?Id like to try burning coal and wood at the same time during these coldest of days

The H4 is just a conventional boiler. In order to burn coal you are going to need to find someway to allow air to enter from below the coal and be fed through the coal bed. More then likely you will also need a forced hot air blower to push air through from underneath. Coal doesn't like to burn without a forced air source and is impossible to burn without any way for air to be fed through the bottom of it.
