I have a hardy H-4 without shaker grate, I am wanting to burn lump coal. I found it for 70 dollars a ton. Will it be ok to burn coal only? Possibly burn some wood with it too just not as much..
-
I'm sure it can be done. You will just have to stir it up often as opposed to shaking the grates.
-
Ok. I'm going to try it maybe even this winter yet? I have done some test buckets in it and have been impressed with burn times and recovery!
-
Coal burns hot, would it not warp your burn chamber?
-
Hardy has coal units only difference is shaker grates. I'm going to try it. Hopefully soon it's cold here on ohio..
-
I've been burning some Bit coal but I'd like to get some lump coal. I can't get it around here so I will have to travel for it.
-
I found lump coal in Caldwell for 70 dollars a ton. Its about and hour away from Coshocton. I'm going to call around and try and find it.
-
Are they open on Saturday's. I live in Strasburg. I was told I could add some when it get real cold.
-
I'll post the number later when I get to work. That's where the add is.
-
You will probably have a hard time burning coal in a natural draft furnace. It needs a lot of air to burn.
-
Walkerdogman,
I am in watertown and have been getting coal in new lexington. It is also $70 a ton. They will allow you to hand pick it from a pile or they will load you. The stuff is straight out of the mine and unprocessed so the large pieces are larger than a beach ball.
Its the tunnel hill road reclamation mine.

Will it hurt the stove since it doesn't have fire brick in it, to burn coal?
-
I got some coal yesterday for free. I'm headed out now to check it.
-
No it will not hurt it not using fire brick.
-
I went to my local feed mill today and bought some coal. I got 180 lbs to try out. It seems to be burning good. I put really dry oak down first and then the coal. It sells for 180 a ton. I took a picture, but the up loader is full. I'll try later.
-
I am impressed with coal. I gave some to a friend of mine who also has a hardy and just after one night he wants to go buy some bigger stuff. It has cut my wood usage more than 50% in the last 3 days at temps 0 and below at night! My job is based off of coal so I'm going to heat off coal....
-
I'm with your friend. I'm going to buy half a ton on Friday. I think with the natural draft, It will only burn when real cold out side. I set my differential to 4. I tighten it up to keep the coal hot.
-
I'm not sure how to set my differential or I would do it. Coal does need alot of air.

Here is a link for honeywell aquastat. http://s3.supplyhouse.com/manuals/1350890933994/83991_PROD_FILE.pdf (http://s3.supplyhouse.com/manuals/1350890933994/83991_PROD_FILE.pdf)
When you take the cover off the aquastat. You will see a white dial. That is your differential. It should go between 5 and 25. It is on page 9 shows the white wheel. The big wheel in the front is your setting for your high limit.
I hope this helps.
-
Thanks, I saw the high point setting as i turned it i realized thats what it was as the fan was coming on and off as I adjusted it. Ill study the the link you sent me and set it closer. Thanks alot for the info
-
I would recommend just buying a Ranco aquastat and replacing your Honeywell.
-
I like my Ranco a lot better than the old Honeywell aqua-stat- I can easily read the settings.
-
I have heard that before about the Ranco, what makes it better than the Honeywell? I haven't had any issues with it in the 3 years I have had it.
-
What would you guys set the differential at?
-
hey wissel12, we also have a Ridgewood 7500, let me know how the coal works out. I have a coal mine 7 miles from our farm which sells lump coal for $80/ton..................Vincent Paul
-
I like the digital display. It allows me to set it exactly where I want it (which is not always where it should be!).
-
I looked at the aquastat and there was no differential wheel in the back. Looks like I'll be buying a different one for next winter, although since burning coal on these below 0 days the hardy is running often..
-
Yea there's a few different models that Honeywell sells. The one I had on my hardy was not adjustable and permanently set to a 10 deg differential. Get on ebay, they sell ranco controllers for $43
-
Ok. why did you get rid of your hardy? I have considered selling mine and getting something else..
