A guy I know who has a trucking company had a pile of coal laying around and told me to help myself. So I went and got about 500 pounds. The only problem is there is a a lot of fines in it along with some softball size pieces. Will it hurt to burn those fines? I have a Hardy H-4. I wanted big lump coal but for this being free I didn't want to pass it up. I'll post a pick later.

No it wont hurt. I run the fines threw my H4. The only thing I suggest is pile what wood you are burning in the stove then throw your coal on top. I found this to get much better burns and it makes getting the coal lit a little easier. Ive been burning nut coal mixed with almost rice coal and been doing it this way the whole winter. If your just burning coal make sure you have a nice bed of embers before adding coal so it wont fall threw the grates. This way it has somewhere to settle.

Awesome! I'll be going out in a minute to check it after 12 hours. If it works out I want to build a roof over the hardy and make a nice place to store coal and wood.

Here it was after 14 hours. I put 6 pieces of wood in and some coal probably 20 pounds. I raked it around as some of it was stuck together. I put 3 pieces of wood in this morning one on either side with 35-40 pounds of coal in the middle with a piece of wood on top. It's -4 here this morning without wind chill heating 1600 square feet with older windows.. Also littleto no smoke this morning until I opened the door.

Nice does the Hardy have a blower from under the grate?
-
Yeah it has the grates but I do not have the shaker grates in mine. If I end up liking the coal I may buy the shaker grates.

I wish I could burn some in my Optimizer, have tried some but just a shovel full.

Well so far so good. I checked it tonight and the was 1 1/2 pieces of the 3 pieces I put in there from this morning. It looked like it was out so I raked it around and it came to life! I put 5 pieces in tonight layering coal on it. It was raging by the time I shut the door. I do think I need to tighten up the differential. It's on 164 on to 174 off. Its a Honeywell aqua stat does anyone know how to set them?

Honestly walker IMO the shaker grates to me aren't worth the extra $$. I have them and never use them. All I do is use a garden hoe to push the coal around. Works much better for me. If I had to do it over I will not get shaker grates. That's just my opinion.
