White Oak about 4000 lbs dry
Elm about 3000 lbs dry
White Pine 2200 lbs dry
Good hardwood 3500 to 4000
Middle of the road hardwoods and the best softwoods about 2800 to 3500
Soft woods 2300 to 2800
if your friend is burning 1 ton a month of good hardwood pellets he is using about 1/2 bush cord of wood

WillieG.. How do you know the wieght of a certian species of wood that is dry? So your sayin for example.. 1 cord of white oak would equal 2 tons of pellets..Not sure if you can buy a straight type of pellet other than pine..Usually its mixed hardwoods it seems..

there are charts on the net for weightsof dry wood.
-
wood is considered "dry" at 20 percent or less moisture and "dry" wood that weighs 1 pound has about 8600 BTU in it. Now to boil off this 20% would take about 2000 BTU so now "dry' wood has about 6600 usable BTU in a pound
Now remember, a pound is a pound no matter what type of wood it is so the weights i sent last time reflect that the denser teh wood is the less cords you would need to equal your pals ton.
YES your pals ton of pellets would be about 1/2 cord of "dry" oak and that 1/2 cord would increase as teh density of the wood decreased.
remember the less denser the wood, the lighter it is so it would take more wood BY VOLUME not WEIGHT to match the amount of BTU in your pals pellets. Hope that clears it up a little for you
