Ayuh,.... My wood pile lives outdoors, 24/ 7/ 365,....
Once it comes into the backlot from my local tree guy, I saw it into rounds, 'n push it into piles after the chainsaw work is done,....
towards Fall, I go to splittin' the rounds over 'bout 10" or so,....
Any rounds under that, get tossed right into the bucket, 'n brought forward to the near the boiler woodlot,...
Most of the rounds run a foot, to 5 or 6 foot,....
Anyways,....
In my near woodlot, All winter long, I find my Dad's ole pickeroon to be a tool I just can Not live without,.....
It's alittle rough, 'n in need of alittle more love this summer,...
Greatest tool in the world for pullin' stove chunks outa the pile, 'n onto the wheelbarrow,...

A few years ago, I attempted to sculpture a pickeroon of my own, 'n bein' a Metals kinda guy, I went that way,....
While the result is very functional, but it's got that sorta metal Ring to it when ya send it home,....
'n the fence tubin' handle bells out on the beer keg float, so the ready-rod spine has to be tightened when I use it,... ;)

Interesting I've never used one before what is it really intended for? Cool tool though

The one of my Dad's, with the big swell at the end of the handle is Great,....
It's an extension of yer hand, 'n ya get a Solid grip on the swell,...
The ones I see at Logger Supplies are usually something like a 24" or 30" handle,....
The one I made is 'bout 18", 'n I just like Dad's ole little one the Best,....
I don't use a pickeroon in my rounds woodlot, just at the near boiler woodlot, for mostly splits, 'n small rounds,...
Outback, in the cuttin', 'n splittin' woodlot, I've got a big heavy pulpwood hook, a maul, 'n a peavey,...
Most times, I kick a block of wood to break the frost, 'n pickeroon it into the wheelbarrow,....
Last month, I was slammin' blocks on blocks, or usin' my maul to break the frost,...
But, once broke free, pickeroon the loose chunks into the barrow, 'n Go,...
The top corner of the pickeroon head makes shavin' ice, 'n snow off the wood a breeze too,... a nice sharp corner,....
A nice quality lightweight pulp hook might work as well,...
The only wood hook I've got is too big, 'n too heavy to sling wood,...
The D-handle of a wood hook makes slingin' pulpwood easier,....
The straight handle of the pickeroon works better on stove sized wood,...
The swollen butt on Dad's is that much Better,..... ;)

I see those folks make a Pickeraxe, as well as pickeroons,...
Pretty cool, I like their tip design, it's kinda like Dad's,.... that little extra curl helps alot,...
The one I built, I was goin' with a Block Slammer on the other side,... kinda a hammerhead effect,...
It works, but I ain't satisfied with the result,...

Yes I use a pickaroon and a pulp hook everytime I work with logs.
-
Huh, learn something new every day.
-
I just learned about them, but just by instinct I started using my hooks for grabbing square bales of hay.
Saves a little back ache. Going to try to home make one soon.

At a logging mill where I used to work at, we had these, we just called them log picks. I clean forgot how useful they were. I,ll have to remember to get one when I get my next load of oak logs next fall. Very hard on an ol fellas back pulling logs apart from the pile, a log clamp doesn,t always work.

Ayuh,.... I just dug out Dad's ole pickeroon, gettin' ready to reoil the wood handle, 'n put it to use again,....
