i`m not that far from u .been down ur way quite a few times
about 2 hours south.nice country.
last year was cold but sugaring here started around the normal time frame
say end of feb into 2nd week of march
if this keeps up the warm weather will come to quick and within the snap of a finger
BAM it will be done
alot of work for a short sugaring season :'(
-
I checked with my younger bro about the sugaring season this year. He said it's hardly running. He's quite discouraged about the season. Roger

Patience folks, it's coming on soon down here, this weeks rain has gotten rid of a lot of the snow.
on another note has anybody ever tried real Maple Syrup in there Coffee instead of sugar, my Doctor told me about a year ago to knock it off with the sugar unless I like the idea of needles, she said to try Maple Syrup instead, I liked it very much and now my sugar is back to normal :)

Dang! That sounds good. Although I'm physically fit, I'm a boarder line diabetic. I've had to cut sugar out of my diet completely and maple syrup seems like a really nice substitute. I use to put honey in cold cereal. I wonder how that would taste in my coffee? Roger
-
Same her Roger, I drink a lot of coffee, black with sweetener, Maple Syrup is natural and helps to reduce the bad effects of processed sugar the same way honey does and in my opinion tastes much better. Maple Syrup on oatmeal is also an awesome option.

I read an interesting article in National Geographic awhile back, slave trade originally really took off to work on tropical sugar plantations.
A hundred years ago plus the average american consumed about 5-6 pounds of sugar a year, now we consume well over 150 lbs a piece of sugar. Look at the ingredients in something as simple as ketchup, somewhere in there is added sugar. I've been to England several times now and I think the reason most of them stay slimmer is not all the walking, bike riding or smaller meals, as I can't even begin to finish a English breakfast, but it's the fact they don't have all the added crap in their food. Ketchup over there will have tomatoes, water, vinegar and spices, all the ingredients can be pronounced and they just use better tomatoes instead of adding sugar.

Sugar = white death
Sweeten with Truvia [stevia ]
my usuall 2 cents ;D

Sap is running here in Minnesota. I don't have a very large set up but have made a gallon of syrup so far
-
Only made about 12 gallons so far, still walking on 18 inches of hard packed snow and ice and froze up solid. Slim, an idea for you to try that someone showed me years ago, get some maple sap, put it in your tea kettle and make coffee out of it, natural sweetener already in the kettle rather than tap water.
-
Great idea, I drink instant coffee too.
-
try this
1- half ounce of syrup
2-half ounce of milk
3-one ounce of rum or whisky
stir it up and add ice
enjoy!!!!!!!!

Slim. I did the same thing a few years back. Switched from sugar in my coffee to honey. Earlier this year a friend of mine gave me some maple syrup he made here in central KY. I've been using in my coffee instead of honey. I'm out of the maple and back to honey, but next year I'm tapping my own trees and will not run out again. Stay warm...
-
I've sold enough boilers to folks who produce syrup that I rarely run out.
-
Lucky man you are. Stay warm...
-
we got some for sale.50.00 a gallon for anyone who is close to here
-
In WI the trees are flowing sap like people breathe.
-
Here in southern VT it is slow. We've made 750 gallons so far which is ahead of last year at the same time. Hopefully rain on Thurs/Fri will loosen things up.
-
Holy Cow! You have made 750 gallons of syrup? How many taps do you have out?
-
Sap not running but something else is
-
I pulled my taps last saturday, have enough made till next year.

Would it work to use maple sap instead of water to make coffee? Would save the step of boiling it down if it did.
-
Great idea RSI, I'm going to at least try it!
-
Ok this is a new one to me, but my boss at work said that he taps his black walnuts, and makes syrup.
Does this sound right?? ...or is he just blowing smoke mistaken about what type of tree he has
-
Never seen it 4 sale but looks like he was for real

One of my buddies also taps black walnut trees. The syrup is still plenty sweet and has a little nutty flavor.
He boils it with an old barrel stove he made up where he cut out the top and sets trays in. He is looking at better ways of doing it since he burned through the same amount of wood as he does in a month to heat the house just to make 2 gallons of syrup. Anybody have ideas or pictures of what they use?
-
Why not build a rocket stove syrup evaporator?
-
Finally got out of the sugarhouse. Sap ran very good the last few days. We have 8300 taps. So far we have made 1600 gallons. Going to have a good freeze tonight so it should run good tomorrow.

:o
That sound too much like a business and not a hobby/fun
